Attending School of the Talented[]

Nanao having a hard time fitting in with his classmates.

Nanao having a hard time fitting in with his classmates.

Nanao is in class "reading his book" and does an inner monologue of his current circumstances. He introduces himself and how it's been six months since he transferred from the city to a school on a solitary island in the middle of the sea. As he looks around the classroom at students using their talents and gets surprised when a girl suddenly appears in the air in front of him from teleporting, he notes that he's not fitting in at all and that this is an elite school exclusively for children who possess various Talents and commented on how the school's building is old fashion. Someone yells at him calling him "talentless", and it causes him to be jumpy. He turns arounds to sees that it's his school bully and a fire talent user Moguo Iijima and behind with him are two of his henchmen Shoichi Kosakai and Rentarou Tsurumigawa. He asks Nanao why he looks depressed, while using his talent to crackle fire sparks in his right hand. Moguo asks what he's reading and realizes it's a battle comic about students with talents. He grabs his book and makes ridiculing jokes about it saying, "Wouldn't it be interesting if people with these talents actually existed? They'll be heroes.", while holding the book up. Nanao says to him, "I did your homework, Moguo-kun.", when giving back his completed schoolwork.

Moguo gets mad and uses his fire talent to burn Nanao's book and drops it on the floor. He reminds Nanao to not call him by his name and instead call him "Prince of Flames" and threatens to turn him into cinders with his talent, and Nanao gives an anxious smile as he apologizes and call him by his preferred title. Moguo's henchmen starts laughing, and he asks them what's so funny. Seiya Kori an ice talent user, intervenes and tells Moguo that he shouldn't bully others and that Nanao is a chosen warrior of humanity while handing Nanao back his burnt book, but not before he freezes it and mockingly says to him, "Talentless though he may be. Right?". The girls are fawning over Seiya's looks, which makes Moguo jealous and ask does he want to fight him. Seiya declines and gives an arrogant remark that since he's an ice user, they'll one day have to fight for supremacy eventually. While Moguo growls at Seiya, Nanao thinks that he himself doesn't have real talents.

Meeting Nana Hiiragi[]

Nanao first time meeting Nana Hiiragi.

Nanao first time seeing Nana Hiiragi.

Their Homeroom teacher Tannin Kyoushi, tells everyone in class to quiet down or he'll threaten to reduce their monthly allowance they receive from the state. He then gives a speech of how the student here are isolated from normal society to receive special training to battle against the "Enemies of Humanity" as he puts up a picture of them on the board. He informs the students of how the "enemies" arrived on earth 50 years ago, blended into human society, and how they continue to threaten their lives. Nanao realizes from the teacher's impassioned speech that a new transfer student will be joining their class. As the teacher continues on talking about the people needing the talented power to combat the Enemies of Humanity, Moguo tired of listening cuts him off by telling him to hurry up and get the transfer student. The teacher tells the new student to come in, and he writes his name on the board and tells the class that he's Kyouya Onodera and he finishes his introduction with that.

Moguo angrily gets up from his desk and asks him if that was all that he's going say to them. He then grabs Kyouya by his shirt and brings him close to his face that's giving a sinister smile while reminding him that this is an elite class of heroes, and he demands that he tells him what kind of talent he has. Kyouya replies with a menacingly death glare, "Is there some rule that says I have to tell you?", which intimidates Moguo and cause him to walk back to his seat while muttering what Kyouya's problem and that he definitely killed a man before. The teacher explains to the class that they are stilling waiting for him to tell the school what his talent is, and that he hasn't been informed about it either and tells the class to behave themselves and ask the class to stop Moguo and Kyouya if they start fighting. He warns Kyouya if his talent destroys the school building, he'll reduce his allowance. As Nanao watches Kyouya take his seat, he speculates that the more talented the student, the more likely they are to hide it and thinks that Kyouya's talent must be incredible. The teacher also adds that a girl student is also joining them. The new girl is running in the hallway and enters the classroom and apologizes for running late, while trying to catch her breath, and Nanao is captivated by her appearance. She writes her name on the board and tells the class that she's Nana Hiiragi. She addresses to the class that she's aware they're suspicious of her, so she tells them that her talent is to read people's minds but says she's not great at reading the room and that it's nice to meet them while smiling, and this left the class completely dumbfounded. As the teacher starts to tell her where she can sit, Nanao notices an empty desk is next to his, and he places his hand on his chest as his heart beats when he realizes that Nana will be sitting next to him.

Moguo Bullying Nanao in front of Nana.

Moguo Bullying Nanao in front of Nana.

As his heart races, he looks at Nana and can't believe that a cute girl such as her is sitting next to him, and he then glances at Moguo and his henchmen and doesn't want Nana to see him acting lame and wants to look good in front of her. Nana then gets up from her desk and approaches Nanao. She calls out to him and asks if he's being bullied. Nanao's face gives out an embarrassed expression when she immediately found out so fast and she apologizes for being blunt and tells him that she heard what he was thinking. She also tells him that he doesn't like it just shove something into her mouth, and Nanao remembers her mentioning she can read minds while thinking Nana might be some kind of odd ball. He tells her that he wouldn't go so far to say he's being bullied but Moguo barges into their conversation and tells Nana that Nanao is an Enemy of Humanity, and Nana is confused by his claim. He proceeds to her that Nanao is talentless, and he finds it weird since there are only talented students at the school. Nana flips through the pages of one of Nanao's books and shows Moguo a page filled with pictures of the Enemies of Humanity as monsters and asks him don't they look like this. Nanao get excited telling her that's the "standard type" and adds she'll probably learn all about it, he proceeds to inform her that there are bigger ones and ones that look like people, and Nana is shocked to learn the enemies can look like people as well. Moguo pushes Nanao's head on his desk and makes fun of him claiming he's an Enemy of Humanity and to reveal his true form and calls him "Self-Proclaimed Leader". He furthers insults him calling him a showoff and a coward who talks about stuff he can't even do. Nana gets up and tells Moguo to stop hurting Nanao, yells out loud that he's using Nakajima to go on a date with her but tells him that she's not interested, and the entire class hears this. Moguo is embarrassed by Nana, asks her what the hell, and she tells him while pouting that she heard his thoughts. Moguo argues that he wasn't thinking about wanting to go on a date with her but does eventually admit he did a little bit, while the crowd is in awe from hearing his feelings. Nana then turns around to Nanao and asks him why Moguo call him "Self-Proclaimed Leader", and Nanao thinking that she really is a bit of an oddball while Kyouya watches them from his desk.

Appointing a Class Representative Leader Discussion[]

As time passes by, Nana looms over Nanao's shoulder and tells him that she's a fan of the book he was reading earlier and Nanao asks her, "Really...", while being anxious that she's so close to him. She points out that he studies the Enemies of Humanity very thoroughly and that he's very kind, which left him astounded and asks her how. She tells him that she heard his thoughts about him having a cat, and he smiles while admitting to having one but informs her that they can't keep one in the dorm though and that there's a cute one on the way to school. She leans close to his face smiling as she holds both her hands together to ask him if he doesn't mind being her friend and to tell her why he's called the "Self-Proclaimed Leader", and Nanao thinks that she is being persistent. The teacher annoyed at their talking, calls out Nanao's name and reminds them they're in class, and Nana apologizes and tells the teacher that she's a chatterbox. The teacher scolds her for having personal conversation during class and that her voice was so loud that it isn't even in chatting volume and louder than his voice, and she apologizes again for that. Nana then brings up what the teacher was discussing about the students selecting a class representative, and he sees that she was listening, but she corrects him by telling him that she heard his thoughts, which makes the teacher irritated. He addresses that while reading minds is a convenient talent to have, he tells her to not use it on her tests. Nana sits back down next to Nanao and asks him if a class representative is a leader, and the teacher is annoyed from her talking out loud again. He asks the students if there any volunteers for the position, and everyone start rising their hands up, Nana compliments how assertive the students are which she's expects of elite students, especially a group of talented people to be.

Nanao panicking declines fighting for class leader.

Nanao panicking declines fighting for class leader.

Moguo raises his hand and menacingly tell everyone to stay out of it and that since they supposed to fight the Enemies of Humanity, the strongest talent user should be the class rep. Seiya rises his hand as well and agrees with Moguo and saying, "It's what you call "Noblesse Oblige."", and the girls are charmed at the possibility of him being the class rep. Nana then nominates Nanao Nakajima for the position, which cause him to react anxiously of her proposal. Nana proceeds with describing how Nanao studies very hard and that he's kind, and teacher tells her they heard it from her "chatting earlier". Moguo and Seiya don't consider Nanao worthy of the position, and everyone who thinking the same thing laughs at him, while Nana gives them an angry pouting face. She loudly asks everyone what kind a person would make a suitable class rep and further asks them if they see or even fought an Enemy of Humanity. The teacher says no and neither has he at least of real ones. She turns around looking enthusiastic at Nanao, but he informs her he doesn't want to be the class rep. This news shocks Nana and he tells "Hiiragi" to read the room, and she tells him to call her "Nana" instead and Nanao tells her thanks. Kyouya calls out to Fatty (Moguo), Long Hair (Seiya), and Nakajima by his real name and propose to them to fight it out for the position. The teacher tells him that's violent thing to say on his first day of school, and Kyouya not interested in the current situation leaves the classroom. Moguo and Seiya both eagerly agreed to fight, and the classmates gets rallied up as they're excited to watch them fight. Nanao is getting anxious and asks Nana to say something, but she's wondering why Kyouya left while Moguo sarcastically asks Nanao that he don't need to go easy him should he and warns him to prepare himself which terrifies him.

Eating Lunch with Nana[]

Later after class ends, Nanao goes to pick up his other shoes from his locker. He ponders how the next mornings' class was cancelled, so he, Moguo, and Seiya would fight for being class rep. While he puts his other shoes on, Nana shows up and tells him good luck tomorrow and that she's rooting for him. However, he tells her that he's not going to fight and that if he did, he can't beat them, which left Nana a bit disappointed. As he leaves out the school's exit door, she's behind him and reminds him that he's the self-proclaimed leader. Nanao irritated mutters, "I don't know if you read my mind, but...", making it clear he doesn't want to continue talking about it as he leaves school grounds. While walking through the forest, Nana following behind him compliments how there's a lot of greenery on the island and Nanao gets fed up asks her why she is following him. She smiles saying that if he doesn't mind, can he show her around the island and that she doesn't know where to shop or have tea, and Nanao is thinking what's wrong with her but agrees to it but tell her that there's no place to have tea, so they go to the cafeteria. Nanao and Nana sit down on a table having lunch together. She tells him that the tea is good, but he corrects her that it's soba water and ask if she likes it. She looks at all the food on the table and can't believe that it's free and she very grateful for it, and Nanao informs her that tuition and dorm's utilities are paid by the state. Nanao is about to ask her something, and while snapping a chop stick, she cuts him off and says, "Why do you keep following me...", and asks him if that what he is thinking, and he admits it is and telling her that she's an unusual girl. She that if she wasn't, she probably wouldn't be on the island and points out that aren't those with talents act a bit different from normal people, and Nanao confirms that it's true. He then asks her doesn't she feel nervous and also if she received a red invitation letter that suddenly showed up at her house, and she admits it and surprised that Nanao received one as well. While glancing at his wristwatch, he tells her that even though he didn't want to go, he was brought to the island before he knew what was happening. While Nana is stilling eating, Nanao asks her what's her talent of hearing people's thoughts is like. Nana replies that it's like she said earlier about hearing people's voices and she can hear inadvertently but adds if she focuses, she can listen to their innermost thoughts, and Nanao compliments that her talent is amazing. She tells him that there's nothing amazing about her talent. She mentions how back in the city where she lived, she rode on trains packed with people to school every day and with her talent at the time, hears everyone's thoughts on the train like they were on the phone with someone. He asks her what she means by that, and she proceeds to tell him she can hear their one-way conversations, which made her unbearably curious, and declares she couldn't make a single friend. Nanao is astounded from Nana telling him her past. After she finished eating and puts her bowl down, she tells him she wants to see the ocean.

Talk about Nanao "Having a Talent" and Saving Nana from Falling[]

Nanao reaches out to Nana to try to save her from falling off the cliff.

Nana "falls" off the cliff and Nanao reaches out to save her.

They go to a seaside cliff, and she amazed of the view of the ocean from there. Nanao warns her not to lean on the cliff fence's ropes because it's old and it might break which will make her fall off. She then tells him that she knows he isn't talentless and if he was then he wouldn't be recruited to the island. Nanao verifies that he actual does have a talent but downplays it being no big deal. She also points out that Kyouya didn't reveal his talent either and questions if students don't need to reveal their talents. Nanao informs her that a lot of people don't as a precaution, which left her confused. He informs her that it's probably a rumor, that since the people who can fight back against the Enemies of Humanity are gathered here on the island to train, the enemies have set their sights on the place and that they are already here. Nana then asks him if it's bad if the enemies know what their talents are, and he cautions her that they are intelligent and that her talent would probably be useful against them. She points out that what Nanao is trying to say is that since the enemies are here, they're going to try to kill them before they become real heroes, but he reminds her that it just a rumor. Shortly after agreeing with him, she gets "pushed by an invisible force" which causes her to fall that breaks one of the cliff fence's old ropes and she about to fall into the ocean, then Nanao reaches his hand out while calling out her name to try saving her. He manages to grab her arm and yank her back on the cliff's edge and she thanks him for saving her. While sighing, Nanao asks her what happened, and she tells him that she was suddenly pushed by something that felt like wind. This news shocks Nanao greatly and he turns around to see if someone is here, but there was nobody there. She proceeds saying that it all happened in an instant and it scared her. As Nanao guesses that it could have been an Enemy of Humanity, Nana embarrassedly let him know that he is too close to her and still holding on her arm which causes him to be jumpy and backs off and apologizes to her. As she remains feeling awkward from what just happened, Nanao flustered asks her if they should leave.

Provoked Father Issues and Lost Watch[]

Nanao gets angry at Nana for mentioning his father to him.

Nanao gets angry at Nana for mentioning his father due to her "reading his mind".

After they arrived at the dorms, she smiles telling him that he should be the class rep and he ask why she keeps insisting on it. She answers it because he has the purest heart in the class, and she senses a bit of arrogance from the rest of the students and speculates it's probably because they're talented and declares that Nanao is different from them. She points out that he actually wants to be a great leader and fight against the Enemies of Humanity and asks isn't that's why he came to the island, but he just tells her to stop talking about it. He mutters that he's not a leader and not his father. Though Nana didn't hear what he said, he tells her it's nothing and apologizes. She goes on talking about how she's came here to fight against the Enemies of Humanity and how she possesses a strength that only she has and wants to train here to someday work to benefit the world and mankind. Nanao says to her, “That sounds fine for you.”. While he was about to pull on the handle to open the entrance door to go inside the dorm building, she then mentions to Nanao that "he actually looks up to his father", and this comment causes him to make an angry expression while sarcastically tells her that it amazing that she knows everything even without him saying anything to her. Nana saddened apologizes and informs him she can hear his sadness. He asks what she even knows about that and quicky reminds himself that she knows everything and tells her that it's creepy which makes her depressed realizing he is talking about her talent to read minds being creepy. He explains to her that he came to the island because his father told him to and he wanted to meet his expectations, but he admits that he is nowhere close to being a leader and that's why Moguo and the other students make fun of him. While her hand squeezes her skirt, she mentions that he saved her from falling earlier and asks him did he have time to think about meeting expectations then. Growing annoyed he tells her she is being awfully persistent and for her to leave him alone as he opens and slams the dorm's entrance door behind Nana.

Nanao remembering how he lied to his father and realizes he lost the watch he gave him.

Nanao remembering how he lied to his father and realizes he lost the wristwatch he gave him.

While Nanao is in his room laying on the bed, he thinks about Nana of why she suddenly showed up and start acting like that. He recalls the memory of elementary school and how he lied to his father about sharing his food with the boy, so his father wants to give him a wristwatch as a reward on his birthday. Back to the present day, he looks at his left hand and realizes that he doesn't have the watch he gotten from his dad but hears someone knocking on his room door. He opens it and its Nana, which annoys him. He asks her if she still has something to say to him this late at night and that it's the boy's dorm. She actually came to give him back his watch he forgot in the cafeteria, and she noticed that on their way back he stopped wearing it. She proceeds to bow to apologizes for what happened earlier and tells him goodnight before she dashes off. After she left, he is surprised as he looks at his watch in his hand and thinking, "Did she go looking for it this late at night", realizing Nana searched for it the whole night.

Moguo and Seiya fighting to become Class Leader.

The next day in the morning, Moguo and Seiya face each other out in the field, while everyone is sitting on the bleachers including Nanao who decides to not participate in the fight. Moguo and Seiya concludes that Nanao is out of the competition and the teacher calls out to them to grab their attention. He cautions them to not go so hard on each other, but Seiya says that if they fight seriously, they could end up killing each other. The teacher decides that it will be a regular fistfight which shocks them and that whoever falls to the ground first loses and he commences them to start the match. As the crowd cheers for Moguo and Seiya, Nanao glances over at Nana who watching the fight about to begin. As Moguo and Seiya continue fighting, Seiya uses his talent to create ice shards that scratches the right side of Moguo's face that starts bleeding which infuriates him to use his talent as well to create fire on his right hand and charges at him. The teacher reminds then to not use their powers. While the fight goes on and the crowd cheering for them, Nanao thinks that trying to be a leader is stupid and the fight itself is a farce. As Moguo about to land a punch on Seiya, he uses his ice talent to freeze Moguo's right shoe to make him trip to the ground that resulted with him losing and Seiya winning the match. While Moguo angrily punches the ground for losing, the crowd swarms Seiya as well as Nana congratulating him on becoming their class leader, while Kyouya watches them from afar inside the school building at the window.

Nanao uses his talent to save Nana and the other students.

Nanao uses his talent to save Nana and the other students.

As Nanao watches Nana praising Seiya on his victory, he gives off a slightly depressed look as he thinks that in the end, not even she cared who becomes the leader. He then notices Moguo who's muttering "Don't mess with me..." over and over again as he remains bitter over his lose. While he stands back up from the ground, behind him are his henchmen Shoichi and Rentarou. Moguo starts creating a huge fire ball in his right hand and boasts about how someone talented as him shouldn't have to go through stupid little fistfights to win leadership and throws the fireball at Seiya, Nana, and the crowd of other students. He realizes too late that he over did it with his attack as the huge fireball is closing in on them. Nanao sees Nana in danger and runs straight towards her while remembering Nana telling him that she has never been able to make a single friend and his father telling him to achieve greatness and become a leader. This makes him no longer care about being a leader and manage to there in time to stand directly in front of Nana and the students to protect them as he glares down at the incoming attack. As Nana and the crowd braces for impact, the fireball comes into contact with Nanao and disappears.

The class accepts Nanao as their new leader.

The class accepts Nanao as their new leader.

He apologizes to Nana saying he didn't thank her for giving him back his wristwatch yesterday. As she remains confused at what just happened, he reveals to her that he can neutralize people's talents. She tells him that's an amazing power to have. The crowd gathers close to Nanao praise and thank him for saving them while Moguo and Seiya watch in a daze as they're dumbfounded of Nanao's talent, and the class then decides they now want Nanao to become their leader.

The Betrayal and Murder Attempt[]

Nanao and Nana come back to the cliff where they were at yesterday while wearing his watch. He tells her that he can't believe he's the class leader now, and she congratulates him saying that he deserves it and doesn't believe that being good in a fight is the only requirement for being a leader. He declares that he has her to thank for it and admits he was lying to himself and confides to her that even though he's afraid of his dad, he also wants to be like him. She assures him saying, "You can do it, Nakajima-san". While he smiles from hearing that, he asks Nana to call him "Nanao", and they both start smiling together as they now became friends. She wants to confirm with him if his talent able to neutralizes any talents directed at him. He answers yes but doesn't seem to work on mental abilities like Nana's mind reading talent and Nana continues to be amazed and also ask if that's really all. He tells her that he never found it useful when he was at home, and she points out that it's common for people to not know exactly how their own powers work and in his case, he only starts to understand it by being around other talented people like himself. He also addressed that he needs to learn how his talent works since they're going to be fighting the Enemies of Humanity. She theorizes that Nanao might neutralize things that touches his body like what he did with Moguo's fireball from earlier. He thinks that might be possible and says if he doesn't want Nana to read his mind, then he should just touch her. Realizing what he just said to her, he gets flustered and apologizes saying that's not what he meant, and he is actually meant holding hands or something. She reaches both her hands out to grab Nanao's hand and as her eyes start tearing up says for the first time, she can't hear any voices and no longer have to talk to the voices she forced to hear. Nanao thinks that it must have been hard for her too. He then asks her to try guessing what he's thinking right now, and she asks without using her powers and he answers yes while asking her again what's he's thinking. She tells him she knows, while he's smiles thinking, "I hope we can be friends...".

Nana pushes Nanao off the cliff and reveals her true nature.

Nana pushes Nanao off the cliff and reveals her true nature.

However, in a devastating drastic turn of events Nana yanks Nanao over the cliff's edge and pushes him off, but he manages to grab one of the old ropes on the cliff's fence to stop his fall. As he's holding on the rope, Nana sinisterly answers his question saying that Nanao is probably thinking, "Why is she trying to kill me? Right?" as she gives a cold-blooded eye expression at him. She explains to him that during her introduction, she labeled him a bullying victim while he was reading a novel, but he was just pretending to read and wasn't even turning the pages, and further points out how it means he's conscious of how his classmates perceives him and while Nanao is shocked thinking what she's talking about. She goes on how she praised him for his kindness because of the cat scratches on his neck so she knew he was taking care of a cat and the watch he's wearing is too big for him and deduces it's a gift from someone. She mentions that he keeps it polished but he forgot it in the cafeteria and admits that it was hard for her to tell if it was important or not. She also suspected discord between him and the sender. When she found out that Nanao's father was the one who gave him that watch, she egged him on as though she read his mind, which makes Nanao astounded. He realizes Nana lied about reading people's minds. She answers that in a school full of talented students, a talentless student like herself would seem suspicious, revealing that she's actually Talentless. Nanao is shocked and sad. He asks her why she is doing this. As he starts asking if she an Enemy of Humanity, she interrupts him replying that it's the other way around saying, "No, it's because you all are the "Enemies of Humanity."", revealing that she plans to kill every Talented on the island. She explains to Nanao that he in particular have a good chance of becoming an enemy leader and says she didn't mean to follow him around and deepen his despair, but she didn't know how his power works and wanted to find out what his talent is. She calls Nanao and the rest of the talented monsters that are capable of producing fireballs from your hands and teleporting through space. She callously asks Nanao will pushing him off a cliff really kill him and ends her speech by saying that it was all she been thinking about the entire time.

Nanao falls to his death.

Nanao falls to his "death".

As Nanao's hands starts slipping on the rope, he eventually loses his grip on it and let's go, but not before Nana tells him, "For the sake of humanity, please die.", as Nanao gives a despairing look on his face as he falls down into the water. Nana then pulls out her phone to turn on and sees Nanao's expected casualties of over one million. She puts it back in her pocket, while placing both her hands together and closes her eyes to pray in front of the same cliff right after "killing Nanao".

Surviving The Fall[]

Nanao is Alive.

Nanao is Alive.

In Chapters 53-54, a flashback of what happened to Nanao after surviving the fall off the cliff from Nana's murder attempt. He wakes up in bed with bandages and sees a doctor about to insert a syringe into his left arm, which causes him to panic as he yells, "DON'T", and makes the doctor drop the syringe from his hand. He starts breathing heavily, asking the doctor who is he and what was he doing to him. He tells Nanao to calm down as he picks up the syringe from the floor and was about to answer his questions. However, as they make eye contact with each other, the doctor starts experiencing immense pain as he holds his head with his hands and blood starts coming down his nose, while yelling that he was dying over and over again, while Nanao scared watches him. Tsuruoka steps in and punches the doctor in his stomach to knock him out.

After he dealt with the doctor, he turns around to face Nanao, but he "doesn't see him" in the bed. He then looks at the heart rate monitor and that it's still beeping and realizes Nanao is actually still there but invisible and that his talent has expanded. Tsuruoka then picks up the syringe and explains to Nanao that the doctor was simply trying to collect some of his blood so he could run tests on it and shows Nanao that the syringe is empty. He then asks Tsuruoka who he is. He tells him his name and that he supervises talented individuals, and he informs Nanao that he found him floating in the sea and that he saved his life, and hearing this causes Nanao to gasps. Tsuruoka asks him of what happened on the island, and Nanao's hands clenches the bed's blanket, and he remembers what Nana did when she tried to kill him. While trembling, he tells Tsuruoka that a transfer student named Nana pushed him off a cliff. Tsuruoka then asks him that according to their reports, if Nanao's talent is the ability to nullify the talents of others. Nanao confused says to him, "Huh? What?", and Tsuruoka tells him that its nothing and that he found something unexpected, as he places the syringe on top of the medical cart.

As Nanao reminisces being congratulated by Nana and all of his classmates after using his talent to nullify Moguo's fire ball to save them, he talks about how he always thought his talent was useless, but he admits that it was thanks to Nana that he got over his issues with his dad and that he finally thought that he could be a little useful to everyone at that moment. Nanao contemplates that maybe Nana had some reason for doing what she did to him and that she didn't seem crazy and feels like she said that she didn't want to trick him. Tsuruoka amused asks him if he was a little interested in her, and Nanao with a sad expression on his face, denies it saying that it wasn't like that. Nanao then asks Tsuruoka if the doctor he knocked is going to be all right and admits that it was his fault for freaking out earlier.

Nanao meets his father again

Nanao's father enters the room to see his injured son.

Tsuruoka says, "Hiiragi's "reasons," huh...", as he laughs while continuing to be amused by Nanao's naive behavior and calls him a good man twice while he walks to a wall phone to make a call and says on the line, "Bring him.". Soldiers enter the room with Nanao's Father and he glances at his son on the bed and Nanao calls him out as he is surprised to see that his father here to see him. His father drops a bag on the floor and walks up to Nanao and slaps him. He scolds him saying, "SHAME ON YOU!" and that he told him to become the best. He further adds that his company and neighbors now know that his son was the first person to drop out of the school and that "he's talentless". Nanao then glances at his left hand and notices that he's missing his wristwatch and asks Tsuruoka if he seen a watch when he rescued him. Tsuruoka tells him that it wasn't mentioned in the report. Nanao apologizes to his father and tells him that he lost the watch he gave him (Unaware that Kyouya found the watch partially cracked in rocks at the bottom of the cliff where Nana pushed him and thought Nanao deliberately left it behind to let someone who knew it's value that he "died".). His father confused responds saying, "A watch?!". Nanao goes on saying that he's really sorry and plead with his dad to please let him start by apologizing for that. His father becomes infuriated as he grinds his teeth and yells, "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT, YOU IDIOT!", at him. Nanao distress from hearing his father's words says, "You don't care...?", as he let out a nervous laugh and tells him that he gave it to him on his birthday.

Nanao realizes he's the one who did this, as he looks down at his father's body.

Nanao realizes he's the one who did this, as he looks down at his father's body.

His father then yanks him out of bed, as he tells his son what's more important for him is to apologize to the people, he has inconvenient, and it's revealed that Nanao has broken his right leg from the fall and it's in a cast. As his dad continues to yell at him to ask the people to let him return to the island, while Nanao on the floor is asking for his father to stop while his broken casted leg is throbbing in pain. His father then grabs and squeezes his hair making him cry as he keeps telling his dad to please stop. Nanao then yells at him while "making eye contact with him" saying, "I TOLD YOU TO STOP!!!" and his father gets angry at him saying, "How dare you look at me like that-". Nanao's father then starts to experience the same thing that had happened with the doctor from earlier as he holds his head with his hands, writhing from the immense pain, and blood coming down his nose, while Nanao asks him, "What...?", as he doesn't understand what's going on his dad. His father says to make the pain stop and lets out a big scream before he falls to the floor and dies.

Nanao calls out to him and then crawls up to him to see if he's okay and calls out to him again. He yells at Tsuruoka to please help his dad. He asks Nanao on why Nana tried to kill him. Nanao then recalls what Nana said to him, "Because you’re the true "Enemies of Humanity."". He's in disbelief as he says, "No. Me", as he asks Tsuruoka is he trying to say that he did this while he's looking down on his father's body. Tsuruoka explains to him that talented individuals can sometimes expand their powers. He theorizes that Nanao can possibly nullify the processes people need to live, such as their breathing and circulation, but Nanao doesn't believe him. Tsuruoka points out to him, that two humans suddenly started bleeding and collapsed. Tsuruoka takes his glove off his left hand to check for the boy's father's pulse and then pulls out a flashlight to shine on his eye and he tells Nanao that he's dead. Nanao is terrified from hearing this and asks him to call for an ambulance, but he ignores him and goes to the wall phone to make another phone call. He says on the line it's him, Nanao is shocked when he hears Nana's voice on the other end of the call as she calls out Tsuruoka's name. Tsuruoka asks her what condition she is in, and she say that everything is going well. He notices that she's short of breath and asks her if she's in the middle of hunting down an enemy of humanity (This phone call took place in Episode 13 of the Anime and Chapter 27 of the Manga where Nana is running to save Michiru who's about to get killed by Rentarou.). As Tsuruoka starts telling Nana that once her mission is over, Nanao traumatized begins having a train of thoughts going through his head. He's thinking what's going on and that his dad is lying on the floor, wondering what's Tsuruoka discussing about with Nana, and "What is he doing?!" not even trying to help save his father. Tsuruoka tells Nana that people speak highly of her, and she tells him thank you.

Nanao crying as he realized his father really did love him and in denial doesn't believe that he killed him.

Nanao cries in denial believing he didn't kill his father and just now realizing his dad really did love him.

He hangs up the phone and explains to Nanao Nana Hiiragi attempted to kill him on his order and tells him that it's exactly as he had hoped that Nana had a reason to commit murder. As Tsuruoka picks up the bag that Nanao's father dropped earlier, he explains to Nanao that at first glance, his father may seem like a horrible man, but reaching the underground facility where they currently at wasn't easy. The moment they contacted to confirm Nanao's identity, his father acted and uses his considerable wealth and connections to come see the face of his own son. As Tsuruoka poured out all the contents of Nanao's father's bag onto the floor, he tells Nanao that his father seemed harsh because he loved him, as the contents are revealed to be comic books, snacks, and money that he brought for his son. Tsuruoka then says to him, "But you killed him." to make Nanao feel guilty for his father's death. Nanao starts crying and in denial, tells Tsuruoka that he's wrong and that it wasn't him who's responsible for his father's death. Tsuruoka goes towards Nanao, and crouches down and places his left hand on his right shoulder while telling him that he knows that he had a "reason" right and that he didn't realize how his own talents had changed. As Nanao continues crying, he asks Tsuruoka what he is smiling about.

Nanao upset

Nanao's mixed feelings of anger and sadness over his father's death.

He explains it because Nanao is a good guy. Tsuruoka tells Nanao that everything that happened was because of all his fault. he admits to manipulating Nana and that he predicted that his talents had expanded and let Nanao see his father regardless. Tsuruoka says to Nanao, "I am skilled in committing evil acts", as he menacingly smiles at Nanao. Tsuruoka offers Nanao two options, one if he leaves this room and turns right, there will be an elevator that will take him to the surface and Tsuruoka will arrange for a car to take him home. while the second option is if he turns left, he'll be at the research facility and that Tsuruoka will be waiting for him there ready to explain why he saved him. As Tsuruoka turns his back at Nanao as he's about to depart, he tells him that he's free to make either choice, but he knows that he will turn left even if he has to crawl there, as Nanao's face gives a mixed distorted expressions of anger and sadness as he cries over the loss of his father, while looking at Tsuruoka as he leaves him alone in the room with the door open.

The Truth about the "Enemies of Humanity"[]

Nanao meeting a Real Life Enemy of Humanity.

Nanao encounters a Real-Life "Enemy of Humanity" for the first time.

In Chapter 85, a flashback of what happened after Nanao accidently killed his father. When he finishes crying, he leaves his father's body behind and uses an axillary crutch to walk out of the room. He follows Tsuruoka in the hallway to the direction of the research facility. Tsuruoka opens a door to a dark room and he and Nanao enter inside. As he continues walking deeper int the room, Nanao looks around in the dark and asking Tsuruoka what this place is. However, Nanao hears skree and banging noises, which made him jolt and wonders what's making those sounds in the dark. As Tsuruoka turns the lights on, Nanao in a state of extreme dread sees a "Grotesque Terrifying Monster" trapped inside a glass cage and soldiers armed with guns with their backs close to the walls keeping an eye on it. While the monster continues banging the glass in its cage, Nanao falls back on the floor in fear and asks Tsuruoka what is that thing he's seeing over and over again as he continues panicking. Tsuruoka asks him, "Didn't you learn about them in school?", making Nanao remember and realizes what the monster standing in front of him is. The creature then lets a loud skree at them, making Nanao sweat and tremble in horror as he says, "An "Enemy of Humanity"...". Tsuruoka explains to him that often among the citizens, people question whether or not the monsters known as the "Enemies of Humanity" truly exist and how the parents of talented individuals in particular claims that the government is unjustly taking their children to the island and hold protests, but he confirms to Nanao seeing the proof with his eyes that they really do exist. He tells him their goal is to attack living things and that family and friends are irrelevant to them, and further adds unlike Nanao, they don't shed a tear over killing their own parents.

Tsuruoka then tells him, "They retain their Talents even after becoming Monsters-". Nanao baffled by what he just said asks him, "What do you mean? Talents?". He responds saying, "Didn't Hiiragi teach you that the Talented are the True Enemies of Humanity?", as Nanao gives off a nervous smile on his face from hearing his statement. His hands trembles as he comes to the devasting realization of what he's trying to say to him and in disbelief accuses Tsuruoka of lying as he asks him, "That thing is a talented person?". Tsuruoka informs him that it happens in the early 20s at the earliest or up to 40 at the latest. He describes the symptoms on how at first, the talented individual feels as though they're becoming corrupted and at some point, they'll stop caring about morality and eventually want to kill in the cruelest ways possible. He also adds that once their internal transformation is complete, the next thing comes their appearance as their mouths split open, they'll sprout more eyes, and their limbs grow from impossible places. Tsuruoka tells Nanao that the monster in front of them is a survivor recruited to the island more than a decade ago and it used to be a beautiful girl. Nanao says to him, "I Don’t Believe It…", as he remains skeptical of his story. Tsuruoka acknowledges that while he does understand how he feels, he tells him that's how all talented individuals end up. He then tells Nanao that the government simply sends talented individuals off to the island as children to avoid dealing with the issue at hand, but children with talents are continuing to be born even now and that he trying to address this threat. He says that he's trying to find a way to remove the sickness from the talented, and to do that he needs more test subjects and that it's well known that the most powerful talented individuals have unique genes (Such as Nanao Nakajima).

Tsuruoka angrily points out to Nanao that he'll too will eventually transform into an enemy as well, and he is forced to accept the reality of it.

Tsuruoka angrily points out to Nanao that he'll too will eventually transform into an enemy as well, and he is forced to accept the truth.

While still carrying on with his talk, Nanao cuts him off by yelling, "YOU'RE LYING! PLEASE, NO MORE!", as he still refuses to believe what he's says about talented individuals mutating into monsters when they grow up into adults as he covers his ears to not hear any more on the topic. While he's still distraught over learning the dark truth about talented individuals, Tsuruoka walks towards him and grabs him by his shirt, and yells close at his face saying, "EVENTUALLY YOU'LL STOP CARING THAT YOU KILLED YOUR FATHER! IT'LL BE TOO LATE ONCE THAT'S HAPPENED!". Nanao replies, "Really", as he is forced to accept the reality of the situation. After Tsuruoka let's go of his shirt, he tells Nanao to follow his orders and that together they can save the world. Nanao agrees to his proposal and starts working with him. This led to a dramatic transition to his shy kindhearted personality and turning to a ruthless and callous person who hates talented individuals and himself included. He also undergone unseen training of his talent for a few months while participating in human experiments to create a cure for the talented monster mutation.

Encountering Hikaru[]

Nanao Nakajima Returns

Nanao Nakajima Returns.

In Chapter 48, Nanao returns to the Mainland like the rest of his former classmates. At a park playground, he places his hand on the back of Hikaru’s head and uses his Talent Nullification to nullify his talent Gravity Control to stop him from almost killing a little girl out of anger because she looks like Nana by lifting her too high into the air atmosphere. He then calls his name to address him, and Hikaru was shocked to see him alive. He then shoves Hikaru into the ground and asks him about Nana. Nanao tell Hikaru that he heard him mumbling about something that it was all Nana’s fault and demands him to tell him what he knows. Hikaru yells saying that he doesn’t know anything. While Nanao is approaching towards him, he tried to use his Talent on him, but it didn’t work, and he is wondering why. He shortly remembers Nanao’s Talent back on the Island, and not to long afterwards Nanao tells him that he showed it to everyone and asks him sarcastically that have you already forgotten before grabbing him by his shirt and says, "When you're in my presence, you're all talentless.".

Nanao and Hikaru sat down a bench where Hikaru told him everything about the fight he had with Nana on the island. Nanao concluded from what Hikaru told him that it sounds like Nana forgave Hikaru's actions against her. Hikaru refused to accept to accept it and speculated that she probably responsible for the murders that have been happening so far. Nanao suddenly started laughing out loud. He apologizes and talks about how Nana showed him no mercy and was thinking "How cruel can she be?". Hikaru realizes that Nanao was also attacked by Nana as well and said that they should work together to kill her. Nanao mutters to himself about how he intends to end all his classmates (Including Hikaru.). Hikaru asks him of what he just said, but Nanao ignores the question. He looks at him for a moment and then stands up from the bench and simply asks him that if he wants his help then he'll lend Hikaru a hand. He wants Hikaru to announce to the entire class that Nana attacked him first thing tomorrow morning, but Hikaru is too scared and suggests that Nanao should tell them instead since he is Nana's first victim. Nanao gets agitated and clicks his teeth as he remembers Nana's fake smile. He tells Hikaru that if he were to appear to the class now, they'll asks him all kinds of questions such as "You're Alive?" and "What have you been doing until now?" and he doesn't want them to be all over him. To further proves his point, he states that Nana is now the leader and that Moguo and Seiya the most powerful talent users among their class trusts her which will make things more complicated. As Hikaru continues to protest, Nanao interrupts him by placing his hand on his shoulder and looks into his eyes saying, "You'll do it."and his word puts Hikaru in a trance. He tells him that a lot has happened to him in the past few months, and that he realized the potential of his Talent. He compares it to how from a monkey's perspective that humans using written language for communication is a superpower. He explains that the reason people are reluctant to murder one another is because they want to obey the law and how they'll be wracked with guilt because their brains stop them. He states that it is another virtue that's unique to humans and it is a superpower that he can nullify it (Revealing he can mind control people.). He tells Hikaru that he'll remove his fear of retribution. He asks him again you can he do it, can't you. Finally, he said to Hikaru "It's hard for humans to be good little boys and girls, isn't it?". Hikaru in a dazed state agrees.

Framing Nana for Murder[]

Shadow Figure (Nanao Nakajima) mind controls Kiyomi to have her murder Hikaru Daichi.

Shadow Figure (Nanao Nakajima) mind controls Kiyomi to have her murder Hikaru Daichi.

Afterwards on that same day, he went off to see Kiyomi Shimizu and uses his talent to mind control her into wanting to kill Hikaru says close into her right ear "Being a good girl must be hard." and plans to have Nana framed for his murder. He later hides himself in a room across the hall from Hikaru's room and brought with him a plastic bag with snacks such as sweet buns and presumably soda cans to hold himself over in the meantime in just two hours before Kiyomi kills Hikaru. He stayed there until 09:00 p.m.. Later, Nana went to see Hikaru to try to reconcile with him. She knocks on his door and tells him that it her. She opens the door and sees that his room is dark. She’s sees Hikaru who's sitting on a chair with everything else in the room “floating in zero gravity” and comments on how she saw this same sight back on the island and tells "Hikaru" (Unaware that Hikaru was already dead before she even arrived and that the objects in the air are being held to the ceiling by Kiyomi's cobweb threads from her talent.) that he doesn’t need to be so cautious with her. She then proceeds to ask him if it’s alright for her to come inside his room. As she was standing in front of Hikaru's open door, Nanao uses his talent's invisibility perception to sneak behind Nana and struck her with a crowbar to the back of her head that causes her to fall, and she ends up closing the door to Hikaru's room before she loses consciousness. (Not before she caught a faint glimpse of her attacker.). He then dragged her unconscious body inside Hikaru's room, put Hikaru dead body on the floor next to her, and places a dumbbell that is the murder weapon in her right hand before he leaves.

Nanao Nakajima self declares himself a true Enemy of Humanity.

Nanao Nakajima self declares himself a true "Enemy of Humanity.".

He later shows up invisible sitting in a chair inside Tsuruoka's Office. While Tsuruoka was going through some papers, he somehow notices that Nanao is here and tells him that he knows he's there. Nanao asks him how he knows he was here. Tsuruoka tells him a story of back when the country sent sailing ships out to the open sea and when undeveloped lands were colonized one after another, the Natives who didn't have Shipbuilding Technology were unable to recognize the massive ships floating on the sea. He goes on to say that Nanao's talent also him to neutralize the cognitive abilities of humans and to make it seem as though you've vanished. Tsuruoka understands this so he pulls out his phone's camera to see Nanao and said, "I simply used something other than the human eye.". Nanao compliments him saying he's amazing. Tsuruoka asks him are things going well. Nanao answers him saying, "I said hello.". Tsuruoka praises Nanao's talent grown abilities on how he's now more than simply a man who can neutralize the talents of Talented Individuals, but he can also now manipulate people and conceal his presence. Nanao menacing smiles as he proudly says, "I truly am an "Enemy of Humanity."".

Conversation with Tsuruoka of causing a Talented Terrorist Incident[]

Nanao invisible behind Moe while staring at her.

Sometime later, while Nanao is invisible and leaning his back on the wall, Tsuruoka had summoned Moe Makabe into his office and tells her that he been informed that her grandmother Sachiyo Makabe is sick and in critical condition, all while Nanao is behind Moe staring at her. Tsuruoka gives her an envelope filled with money to pay for a train ride home to see her grandmother and offers her his condolences. Moe tells him that she's on Nana side now and that she appreciates everything he has done for her and Sachiyo. He tells her that if she leaves right now, she should be able to make it to the last train tonight and that he'll also visit Sachiyo soon. Moe takes the envelope and runs pass Nanao and goes out of the office's door. After she leaves, Nanao asks Tsuruoka why he want her to owe him a favor. As Tsuruoka grabs a cigarette to smoke, he says that he known her grandmother for close to 20 years and that in her presence he always plays at being the "good man", so he wants her to die still believing that he's a good person. Nanao responds saying, "How tasteful." to Tsuruoka's answer to his question. Tsuruoka asks him does he know why the government's efforts to quarantine Talented Individuals on the island and slaughter them have never been publicly exposed on a large scale. Nanao says because the government officials have covered it up. Tsuruoka admits that he's not wrong and says there's a team supporting the council in the Media and Online and they're responsible for spreading disinformation. However, they're don't take their work seriously enough to efficiently do their job. He explains that people believe what they want to believe, and they hear what they want to hear, so the main reason their illicit actions haven't been uncovered is because people wouldn't believe that their own country is killing young boys and girls and how exactly does that benefit them. Nanao answers that he thinks that Tsuruoka wants to expose the government's conspiracy to the public by working with that shady politician. Tsuruoka says that the old man wants an incident caused by Talented Individuals that will shake the world and that the disappearance of Koharu Mishima and the murder of Hikaru Daichi must be spreading an ominous atmosphere among the talented individuals of the school. Nanao adds that even though they've escaped the island, there is still an enemy of humanity nearby while he points his finger towards himself as he's saying that. Tsuruoka gets up from his chair and says it's nearly time and asks Nanao his thoughts on the class's new leader. Nanao realizes he was talking about Daisuke Souma and tells him that he already went to see him this afternoon and settled things with him.

Flashback: Meeting with Daisuke Souma[]

Daisuke Meets Nanao Nakajima.

Daisuke Meets Nanao Nakajima.

A flashback of earlier afternoon shows Daisuke exiting a car and slam closes the door. Nanao suddenly appears in front of him out of nowhere smiling as he calls out to him and asks him if he remembers him. Daisuke surprised says "You...". Nanao then asks him if he bought the car that he has with him, while Nanao is hovering his hand over the car's window in amazement. Daisuke starts bragging as he describes how he got it. He said that some idiot was blowing his horn at him while he was walking on the road. Daisuke then dragged him out of the car's driver's seat and "taught him a lesson", so the driver offered Daisuke his car. Nanao says that scary and that the old him wouldn't even have been able to talk with Daisuke. Daisuke gets angry and tells him to shut up then as he stomps his foot on the ground. He tells Nanao that he has no interest in "small fries", alive or dead while he is looking menacingly at Nanao closely, revealing that he actually does remember him back on the island. Nanao replies that he's interested in Daisuke. He declares that Daisuke is totally indifferent to the incidents at the school and that since he left the island, he seems to be trying to start some kind of sketchy business on the mainland.

Daisuke boasts on how he just raided a phone fraud office and took the place over. He asks Nanao what about it. Nanao says Daisuke couldn't even get a part-time job on the Island. He then asks Daisuke if he likes money, as Daisuke clicks his teeth affirms that he likes money and power and went on to describes himself saying, "Just your run-of-the-mill uneducated thug who wants to be on top. That's me.". Nanao tells Daisuke that he and himself already have special powers, but Daisuke responds saying that he wants the power to control people and force them into submission. He says that for example in extreme cases, the ability to get away with stealing a car using violence is the kind of power that he wants for himself. Daisuke explains that as individuals, talented people are special, but they don't stand a chance against a group of humans and that even the most powerful talented individuals will die if they're sniped by someone too far away to notice. He went on to say that the stupid attention seeking monkeys (his classmates.) who don't get that can have fun enjoying their adolescence with each other. Nanao starts laughing and says how well put of Daisuke's statement and then makes a joke saying if they're monkeys then why he don't become the zookeeper. Nanao tells him that he wants him to become the class's leader and that Tsuruoka, and the military would back him because apparently, they think Nana is unreliable. As Daisuke leans his back on his car door, he talks about for a long time, he has wondered if there were ways to make these monkeys dance as he reminisces a memory of his time in class. He says that the military seems shady to him, but if they clean up his messes, then it's not a bad deal. However, Daisuke asks Nanao why he don't become the class leader. In response to his question, as Nanao closes his eyes while smiling and tells him that he hates everyone. Daisuke grins as he lets Nanao know that he realizes that he wants to use him. Daisuke says all right with forming an alliance and that he just so happens to be bored.

Back to Present Day: Conversation with Tsuruoka[]

Tsuruoka asks Nanao if he controlled Daisuke using his talent. Nanao says that when he first approached Daisuke, he thought he would. He went on to describe Daisuke as someone who's always been a bit screwy and that he's the type of guy who wouldn't hesitate to kill someone for his own benefit. Nanao declares that talented individuals are all bad people, as he recalls a memory of his time in class on the island.

Daisuke and Tsuruoka Conversation[]

Sometime later Daisuke visits Tsuruoka in his office to discuss Moe possibly revealing to the class that "he killed Takeo Saijo" (Indirectly through Sachiko who killed Saijo on accident while trying to kill Daisuke to protect Kiyomi from him, but he set her up into killing Saijo instead.), while Nanao is invisible as he's leaning his back on the wall as he secretly listening in on their conversation like he did with Moe earlier. Tsuruoka deduces Daisuke's plan was to kill Nana in a manner approved by his classmates, rule them with fear, and make money. Daisuke replies that's just business and talented individuals would make a good show. He takes it further that he could kill someone and sell the snuff film of it or make porn. He asks Tsuruoka what's wrong with that. Tsuruoka states it was nothing wrong that. He comments that despite Daisuke's build, he enjoys employing roundabout methods and that he thought he was helping him. Daisuke gets agitated as he asks Tsuruoka if he's calling him slow.

Nanao invisible continues watching Daisuke talking to Tsuruoka.

Nanao invisible continues watching Daisuke talking to Tsuruoka.

Tsuruoka suggests that he can just kill Nana if she's in his way and that anyone fights back against him, he can kill them with his talent. Daisuke asks him if he's okay with that and that he could end up killing some dude or kid within the area and questions if Tsuruoka and the military are able to keep the cops out of it and cover it up like he did with Saijo's case. Tsuruoka notes that having too strong a talent can be quite a challenge. Daisuke doesn't want to go to prison and that best use he can do with his talent is to threaten people with it by showing it off. Tsuruoka realizes that even though Daisuke looks unsophisticated, he aware of the reality of his situation and tells him that as long as he doesn't lose his composure and cunning that Nana won't be able to outsmart him. Tsuruoka tells Daisuke that if people believe that Moe knows something then he should simply make use of it. Daisuke gets confused for a moment by what he said but quickly catches on to what Tsuruoka is trying to get at. Tsuruoka tells him that he could make the class believe that Nana is the killer and that Moe Makabe won't speak up because she's, her friend and the reason why her testimony was vague is because she felt conflicted. Daisuke says that sounds more plausible and Tsuruoka lets him know that he'll tell the class what happened to Moe Makabe and her grandmother and tells Daisuke to use it well, while Nanao is invisible sitting in a chair across from Daisuke as he continues talking to Tsuruoka.

Talented Incident is initiated and The Hunt of Talented Individuals Begins[]

Nanao finds Daisuke trapped in the basement storage room.

Nanao finds Daisuke trapped in the basement storage room.

Nanao later finds Daisuke trapped inside a basement storage room of an abandoned warehouse that's filled with tires full of water and tells Daisuke that it looks like he lost, while shining his flashlight through the basement's door hole gaps. He sets Daisuke free from his confinement and as Daisuke sat on the ground says it's not over and that they're definitely scared of his talent as Nanao just looks at him. He becomes infuriated that he lost and how he won't make the same mistake twice. He continues ranting about how he just got a little heated and had he been thinking straight, there's no way he would have come near this dangerous place, as Nanao just watches him. Nanao says to him there's something that he doesn't understand and asks Daisuke if he doesn't mind if he asks him a question and Daisuke replies saying, "What". Nanao asks him if he was friends with Saijo. He answers that they were in the same football sports club and that Saijo was easy to read and a good guy as well, as he recalls his memory of Saijo supporting him. Daisuke knew that he'll be able to use him someday and have heard the rumors that he had a crush on Nana, and it was obvious that it was true, so it was easy for Daisuke to get him to come by leaving him a fake letter from her under his room door. Nanao asks him another question regarding his talent on if it's really that bad for him to use your talent here at the warehouse. Daisuke annoyed clicks his teeth, explaining to him that when you send an electrical current through conductive materials it generates something called joule heat. Appliances like Electric Kettles and Rice Cookers control this heat and use it effectively. To simply put it, electricity generates heat. He continues explaining and ask him you know how Lightning occasionally strikes mountains and starts fires. It's because the crazy powerful electrical current causes the moisture inside trees to instantly evaporate and the volume of the suddenly vaporized moisture expands by several thousandfold, causing an explosion. This phenomenon is known as Phreatic Explosion.

Nanao asks him so he's saying that these little puddles of water in the tires can cause a huge explosion and he doesn’t think that sound right. Daisuke compares it to how hot oil pops when you drop water in it and that's what it will be like but taking place on a huge scale. As Nanao is poking at the water filled tires, he asks Daisuke that he like for him to do it. Daisuke calls him an idiot and that it would kill them. Nanao then looks into his eyes saying, "No you're going to do it." as he uses his talent to mind control him and it puts Daisuke in a trance, but he seems to remain aware as he questions what was happening to him. Nanao starts talking about how Tsuruoka won't shut up about causing a major incident and he wants him to create one. Nanao tells Daisuke that he's been looking for a talented individual who can do that and laugh as he saying he was observing his progress since he found it interesting. Nanao then goes on saying, "For humans having to be such a goody-two-shoes sucks, doesn't it?" and that he understands that Daisuke "pretend to act rationally" but tells him that he's straining himself, isn’t he. He admits that Daisuke has a firm grasp of his own talent and that he what he really wants is to blow something to smithereens, so he tells him to "Allow your animal instincts to take over.". As he recalls his memory of Saijo, he tries to resist the urge to use his talent knowing full well what happens if he uses it here right now. Nanao then starts leaving the area as to not get caught up in the explosion, while saying to himself that he better out of here quickly as he leaves Daisuke to his "forced suicide". As Daisuke stomps his foot on the ground as he starts preparing to use his talent, he yells "SOMEBODY HELP ME!" as he places both hands on his chest to activate his talent. As he unleashes his talent's power, he recalls his memory of a football being thrown in the air in his final moments.

Moguo says they can start with telling Nana that they know she's a murder, and one of his henchmen Shoichi Kosakai tells him that he can't just come out and say that, even though Moguo agrees with him nervously as he says "but". Nanao interrupts him saying that it's true as he turns around to face Nana and says that she tried to kill him. Nana is taken aback by Nanao's sudden appearance as he's now standing right in front of her own eyes again after what she did to him. As she recalls her memory of Nanao as she's looking at him, she clenches her hand and tells everyone saying, "That's right. I did it".. She admitted to all of her crimes and desperately tried to convince the class to run. They were some guys like Moguo who believed a little of she said.

However, Nanao uses his talent on the students to release their mental restraints, causing them to gang up and beat Nana almost to death. After she stopped moving, soldiers come in the school, stuffed her inside a body bag, and carried her out of the building. Sometime later, Nanao had gone back to the island to revisit the very same cliff that Nana pushed him off of when she tried to kill him and stands on the edge of it as he looks down at the ocean. After the incident created by Daisuke, the Talented are now officially known as enemies of humanity.

Three-Year Time Skip: Nanao giving Nana a Work Tour[]

Nanao nana meet again

Nanao and Nana Three Year Reunion.

In Chapter 69, the investigator starts filling in Nana on the social climate changes that happened during the three years she was in solitary confinement, such as a new bill that was passed by the New Prime Minster Kario that imposed many restrictions on the rights of talented individuals, and that the prison she's currently resides in has expanded and become a Managed Camp that had been restructured with high walls and of barbed wire that now encircle nearby neighborhoods. He adds that talented individuals, their families, and serious offenders are transported here from across the country. Then, he says that he’d like for Nana to use her experience to supervise and manage talented individuals at their beck and call.

The investigator then calls out to Nanao calling him "special director" to handle the rest. Nanao walks up behind Nana and leans to her right ear and says, "I hope we can get along.", which surprises Nana as she realizes that it is Nanao. As the prison gates open, Nana is accompanied by Nanao and his soldiers. As she adjusts to the sunlight, she sees that the city is now is a ghost town that's in ruins. Nanao tells her that they'll take a walk around town, as he explains to Nana her job and she thanks him. As they walk, they see a dead man tied on a wooden pole. As Nana steps on glass mirror shards on the ground from a broken traffic mirror, Nanao asks her, "You're no stranger to corpses, right, Nana-chan?". While he calls her name out again, Nana is crouched down on the grounds and she apologizes to him and tell him that her shoes were loose, so she just tightens them up (She lies as she was actually crouching down to grab one of the glass mirror shards on the ground.). She asks Nanao of what crimes was the dead man accused of for the military to have punished him like this. Nanao looks up at the man's corpse, but he doesn't remember and asking himself "What was it again?". One of his soldiers speaks up and tells Nanao that the man "insolently" offered his opinion to them. This jogs Nanao's memory as he also adds another reason was "For daring to wear a solid gold necklace when he was just a kid, right?" as he points at the dead man. While his soldiers start laughing, Nanao asks Nana can she dispose of the corpse later. He explains to her that as their agent, she'll be doing jobs nobody wants to do but in exchange, she'll be rewarded with better meals and a nicer place to sleep compared to the others. Nana replies saying, "My pleasure.". Nanao also reveals to her that he was the one who recommended and had her released from solitary confinement and asks her to try not to make him look bad. Nana tells him that she turned over a new leaf a long time ago and that from now on she's intends to live as easily and comfortably as she can. Nanao tells her that he’ll be watching her at all times. Nanao then starts using his talent to turn invisible asks Nana if she knows that he can do that. His soldiers who can't see him asks, "Where did you go?". Nanao tells them that he's over here and to follow him, while he's still invisible. The soldier responds by saluting and saying, "YES SIR!". Unknown to Nanao, Nana has a hidden mirror shard in her right arm sleeve, and she uses it to see where he is.

Later, Nanao is now visible, and he continues showing Nana around and asks her if it was three years that she was in solitary confinement at headquarters, and Nana smiles as she tells him that she's glad that she's been let out. He retorts her statement, telling her that this place is still a prison. She tells Nanao that she heard talented individuals, and their associates are captured around the country and quarantined here at the camp. He tells her that's right and it is the current policy. He explains that a basic residential area has been established and that they're allowed the bare necessities. He makes mocking remarks at Nana saying, "Compared to being covertly killed. It's far more humane, don't you think?", talking about what she did him and the students on the island three years ago.

Moguo sees Nanao again after Three Years.

Moguo sees Nanao again after Three Years.

Nanao brings Nana towards a crowd of people waiting in line to get food. He tells her that they receive meals twice a day, and its mostly rock-hard bread and plain broth. Nanao says that fights often break out, he gets interrupted from a crash noise. It reveals to be a slim down Moguo who is with Shoichi. Moguo slams his hands on the table and demands to be given one more loaf of bread for his other henchmen Souta. He tells them that he's sick and been having a fever since yesterday, so he can't come get here himself. He promises them that he's not trying to cheat the system and continues begging to them. As he still causing a commotion, Nanao's soldiers go to check the scene while Nanao himself and Nana watches. Nanao realizes it's Moguo. Moguo angrily flips the table over spilling the pots filled with broth on the ground because of them refusing his request. As the soldiers grab him, he tells them to let him go. He then starts to use his talent to engulf his right hand on fire as he about to attack them, but Nanao steps in and places his hand directly on Moguo's fire and nullifies it. He points out to Moguo that he lost a lot of weight. Moguo is surprised to see Nanao again. Nanao tells Moguo that this camp’s is intended to turn talented individuals like him into normal people, so he asks him why he's using his talent when the rules forbid it, as he is waving his hand at Moguo. Moguo starts complaining telling him even when they follow the rules, they don't treat them like humans. Nanao then starts laughing and says to him while smiling, "You should be grateful we're not killing you.". Moguo angrily tells Nanao to not lie to him and asks him how many people he thinks have died because of his whims. Moguo states that he knows all about Nanao's actions on dragging people to the camp headquarters. Before he could finish his sentence, Moguo notices Nana and realizes she's alive as he calls out her name to her. Nanao waves his hand at Nana to come here and tells her that this is the perfect opportunity. He hands her his retractable stun baton. She asks Nanao if he wants her to punish Moguo. Nanao tells her that's a good guess and that her job is to manage and observe the talented. As Nana just stares at Moguo, Nanao asks her what's wrong. He tells her that Moguo deserves to be punished since he broke the rules. He also adds that if she doesn’t want to do it, he'll have her sent back into solitary confinement. A soldier calls out to Nanao and reports to him that a talented individual is causing trouble in the western district. Nanao annoyed says, "What? Again?" and that it can't be helped. Nanao starts pointing his finger at the soldiers and telling them that they'll hurry to the location immediately. He tells Nana that he has to go due to him having matters to attend to, so he will be "stepping away". He uses his talent to turn invisible and tells her to be sure to discipline Moguo properly as he leaves.

Moguo speaks to Nana and tells her he's glad she alive which left her confused by his statement. He begins saying that he's sorry and that he always wanted to apologize to her. She mentions three years ago of how she confessed her crimes to him and the rest of the students, but nobody listened to her. Moguo says that they lost their minds and that Nanao was responsible for it and of how something happens when he stares at you. Nana then expands Nanao's stun baton and approaches Moguo chides him and the class for ganging and attacking her as she gives a furious expression. Moguo starts to run away from her but bumps into the table with boxes of bread and trips on the ground and she warns him to not run. Shoichi yells out "BOSS!" to Moguo as Nana grabs him by his shirt while she rises the baton in her right hand. She leans to his right ear whispering, "Fake it.", which left Moguo confused. She then swings her baton and hits Moguo's left side abdomen which scares Shoichi and the crowd of people. Nana tells an unconscious Moguo that she tired and nothing good comes from her defying Nanao and Tsuruoka.

Nanao real thoughts about wanting Nana to continue being his friend.

Nanao's real thoughts about wanting him and Nana to continue being friends on the cliff three years ago.

Afterwards, Nanao reveals himself behind Nana and starts clapping as he congratulates her. Nana notices him and asks he's still here, and Nanao apologizes to her. He admits while it's true that he needs to go right away, he wanted to test her. Nana asks him what did he mean? He explains that Nana once had a change of heart and defiled Tsuruoka, so he pretended to disappear because he wanted to see if she really properly punishes Moguo. Nana replies saying, "I see" and apologizes for making him worry about that. As she hands Nanao back his stun baton, he explains to her that his ability to vanish is just a trick he can pull on people's perception and that people can often see him when they calmly view through something like a camera. Nana confused asks him, "And?". Nanao tells that "A mirror works as well.". He tells Nana that when she was walking the town earlier, she was complaining about her shoes being loose, so she crouched to tighten them. He further adds that there were pieces of a broken traffic mirror scattered on the ground. He walks up to her to check her right arm for the mirror, but he sees nothing. He tells himself that maybe he was wrong, then he proceeds to check the other arm, but nothing was there either. Nana asks him, "What's the meaning of this?". Nanao tells her that he theorized that he thought Nana had struck Moguo because she used a mirror to confirm that he was still present and that’s why she hit Moguo (Unaware that she noticed when he turned invisible, the ground where he was standing in that's muddy wet from Moguo spilling the broth earlier, didn't have any footprints of him leaving the area, so she hide a loaf of hard bread under Moguo's shirt to soften the baton's impact and so the latter can feed his friend, and also moved the mirror shard to her right leg under her clothes beforehand.). She answers him that she doesn’t have the courage or motivation for tricks like that anymore while laughing. He tells Nana that he believes her. Nanao says that he’s going to assign someone to Nana and that she needs to follow their instructions. As Nano about to leave, he talks to Nana about their time on the island and above the cliff before Nana pushed him off and when he still believed she were a talented individual who could read minds, he tells her that he genuine thought back then, a memory of Nanao thinking, "I hope we can continue to be friends." about Nana as they hold each other hands while standing on the cliff. As Nanao leaves for real this time, Nana is left saddened from learning Nanao's true thoughts of her back then, while Shoichi behind her looks angrily at her for what she did to Moguo.

Meeting Rin Onodera with Tsuruoka[]

Rin Onodera meets Nanao and Tsuruoka.

Rin Onodera meets Nanao and Tsuruoka.

Nanao and Tsuruoka walks in the headquarters' hallways. Tsuruoka informs Nanao that he heard about him releasing Nana from solitary confinement. Nanao says to him, "I didn't have anything else to do.". Tsuruoka reminds him that he’s also a talented individual too. Nanao asks him if trying to warn him to not get cocky, and he points out that he even participated in his experiments. Tsuruoka says to him, "What were the results of the experiment?". Nanao answers him, didn't he to this place to see for himself. He and Tsuruoka then walk up to an imprisoned girl's cell named Rin Onodera and Tsuruoka asks her how's she's feeling and calls out her name to her, while she glares at the two of them.

Tsuruoka asks her how she feels, having lost the ability to use her talent. Nanao asks Tsuruoka is his ultimate goal is to remove talents from people. Nanao goes on how taking away the human rights of talented individuals three years ago, has certainly made it easier to perform experiments on them and even openly gather funds for research. Tsuruoka thinks that Nanao seems upset that his cells are being used to produce new medicines, but Nanao replies not really. Tsuruoka explains to him that currently, the effects of the medicine are only temporary, and that it has to be administered regularly to suppress any symptoms of talents. Nanao tells him to not talk about his talent like it's a disease. Tsuruoka says to Nanao, "The truth is more often than not, talents cause misfortune." as Nanao looks at Rin in her cell.

Searching House for a Camera[]

Nanao Sudden House Visit.

Nanao sudden house visit.

Later, Nanao accompanied with soldiers shows up to a house and opens the door to find Nana with Shizuka Saeki and also Kiyomi Shimizu and Moe Makabe who recently turn themselves in and allowed the government to place them in the camp. He says hey to them, and they are shocked to see that he's here. He tells them to not be so tense and that he's here just to see some old friends.

He's referring to Kiyomi and Moe who the government was unable to capture them, suddenly made an appearance all on their own. He then speaks to Moe and tells her that she's been a pretty famous person. He goes on despite her being ranked low on the wanted list, due the government thinking she is insignificant, she never been caught and that she also has been engaging in anti-government activity on the outside. Moe smiles as she thinks that sounds like a compliment from him and he smiles back at her with his eyes closed. He then says to her, "You brought in a camera. What were you planning on doing with it?” as she nervously sweats while touching her "broken camera glasses".

Kiyomi sees Nanao again after Three Years, and she remember him using his mind control on her to kill Hikaru.

Kiyomi sees Nanao again and remembers him using his talent to mind control her into killing Hikaru Three Years ago.

Nanao then changes the subject by asking them where's Sachiko and that he don't care for nobodies like Moe and Kiyomi. He turns attention towards Kiyomi and admits to her that Sachiko's teleportation talent is problem, and after the trouble they been through to finally capture her, Sachiko can easily teleport her out. Nanao triggers Kiyomi's mental trauma from three years ago as she remembers him using his mind control on her to kill Hikaru. He says he's sorry to Kiyomi for having her kill someone under his control and he apologizes for that. He asks her again on where's Sachiko. As Kiyomi sweats profusely, she gulps and tells him that she doesn't know. He responds telling her that they received reports she and Sachiko are friends and are on the run together and adds that only one of them which is Kiyomi suddenly appears with a camera hidden in some glasses. She tells him that she and Sachiko split up. Nanao then coldly points out to her saying, "It's your fault Sachiko killed Saijo-Kun." and continues pressing her to tell him Sachiko's location.

Nana then comes to bump into Nanao, and he says to her what is it. She lies telling him that she didn't want to cause trouble for him, so she was actually asking them for Sachiko's location as well before he arrived and says that it doesn't make sense for Kiyomi to came and she didn't. She makes a request of him to allow her to earn points with him and he just says, "Oh. Really". He tells the group that he'll be searching their house and that looking for Sachiko is the outside guy's job. Nana is puzzled by his statement as she says, "Searching our house?". Nanao suspects that since Moe wore those glasses to secretly take photos, he thinks that he might find something else here that they're trying to hide. He then orders the soldiers to start searching the house. The soldier goes through their carrying bags, going to the other rooms, and checking the floorboards. Moe tells them that they won't find anything, and Nana offers to help in the search, but Nanao stops her and tells her that she and Shizuka are to stay where they are, as he suspects them of already have been given something from them. The soldiers look through the sink and bathroom, and a soldier tells Nanao that they didn't find anything unusual to report. Nanao then tells them to search Nana and Shizuka before they leave. A soldier orders them to raise their hands as they are going to use their metal detectors on them and Shizuka tells them to not touch her. She nervously watches Nana being searched thinking to herself is she's going to okay and calls her sis in her head. The soldier finishes using the metal detector as he found nothing on her.

Nana wants to apologize to Nanao.

Nana clings on Nanao's back and asks him can she have a private conversation with him later, so she can properly apologize to him.

Nanao displeased says, "Sorry for the trouble.", as he and the soldiers start leaving. Nana tells him not at all and thanks him for his efforts. As he and the soldiers exit the building, he watches them from far behind them and thinking to himself, "They're all idiots. Every last one of them." with an annoyed expression on his face. Before he continues leaving the area, Nana caught up to him and calls out his name to him. She clings to his back and asks him if she and him can have a private conversation sometime. He asks her why; Nana gulps and says, "I still haven’t properly apologized for what I did to you.". He tells her that he'll think about it, with his eyes still gloomy as ever, as he leaves Nana off of him and goes to the direction of the soldiers (Unaware that she hidden the camera on him between his clothes and belt when she first bump into him earlier, and just now retrieve it back from him before he leaves.).

Soldier Takai's Death Fall Incident[]

Nana lets Nanao and the soldiers into the room.

Nana lets Nanao and the soldiers into the room.

Nana brings Nanao and his soldiers to the abandoned building that a soldier named Takai uses to bring women there to drink alcohol with and meet up with a talent individual named Akira Itakura who can hide in people's shadows and who he forced to look for dirt on his colleagues and superiors to line his own pockets.

Nana then opens the door to the room that Akira was sleeping in which woke him up and lets Nanao, and the soldiers enter. Nana says thank you to Nanao and tells him that she didn't think he would come, and Nanao replies that he had nothing better to do. He asks the soldiers on who is Takai, and they tell him that he's a troublemaker and there's a rumor that he uses talented individuals to blackmail them and one of the soldiers admits that Takai once extorted him. Nanao says that Nana informed them that Takai skips work to day drink here. While Nana slides open the window door to the balcony, she asks Nanao if that was impertinent of her. He simply says to her that it's not her job as a watchman, and Nana replies that she wouldn't be one without all of them and she blinks while standing by the slide window door.

Nanao notices Akira in the room asks Nana on who he is, and she tells him that he's the one who told her that Takai comes to the building that they're in right now to skip work. As Akira confused of the situation, one of the soldiers recognizes him as Takai's Dog, and Akira gets scared jumpy when he hears this. The other soldiers are surprised by this but the soldier who recognized Akira tells them that it definitely him as he angrily walks towards Akira, while Nanao watches them from the sidelines. He grabs him by his shirt and says, "Takai takes real good care of you, doesn't he?", and Akira tries to talk to them to defend himself and calls out to Nana for help. She then asks him if this the room that Takai uses, but he's not there. The soldiers become even more enraged and demands Akira to tell them where Takai is, but he tells them that he's not here, but they don't believe him. Akira yells that they got it wrong and that this isn't the room that Takai uses and that he's actually on the floor above, he gets interrupted as he sees a man falling (Kyouya dressed in a soldier's uniform pretending to be Takai.) outside the balcony to the ground and he and the soldiers witnesses this in great shock, and while Nana is also seeing this as well, Nanao himself is completely indifferent to what's currently happening. Nanao sees the soldiers going out to the balcony and goes out there with them as well. The soldiers look down on the ground and see the body, but Nanao says hey to snip them out of it and he accompanies them as they go down the stairs to check out the scene, with Nana and Akira following behind them. As they arrive at the location of the body, a soldier places his hand on the corpse's head to move the hair, so they can see it's face and everyone can see that it's the soldier Takai that they were looking for.

The soldiers confirms that the man's body is Takai, the missing soldier they were looking for.

Nanao orders one soldier to watch the stairs incase the culprit comes down them and two other soldiers to wait at the scene to investigate the surrounding the area, and they salute him as they say to the tasks. As the soldiers get to work, Nanao sighs as he asks Nana and Akira to come with him to check out the room above where Takai fell from. When they arrived, Nanao looks around the room and thought the culprit was hiding but nobody was there. Nana points out that they didn't pass by anyone on their way up the stairs and speculated that perhaps they're hiding in another room. Nanao says that'll he summons a few more men to help investigating the area. Nana then theorized that Takai might have killed himself or that it was an accident. Nanao asks her if she thinks that Takai got drunk and fell. While he notices an empty beer can by his right foot and more beer cans and a wine bottle on the table, he calls out to Akira tells him that he heard that Takai looked after him and Akira says yes.

Akira telling Nanao that he didn't kill Takai and that it's the truth, while Nana points out the boy's odd behavior to Nanao.

He then questions him if he killed him because hated being made to serve him, and Akira shakes his head and tells him that it wasn't him and openly tells him that he thought about killing Takai a bunch of times. Nanao then points out to him that he just admitted to having a motive. Akira shakes his head again and tells him that he didn't do it and reminds him while his eyes sparks that when "Takai" fell he was in the room with him. Nanao responds that he could have used his talent but realized that his talent was hiding in shadows, so it was impossible for him to push Takai while he was with him, and Akira nods yep to hearing this. Nanao asks Nana if she has any ideas on the matter. She tells him that if Akira really did kill Takai, he would've written a fake note to make it look like a suicide or done something to the balcony railing to make it break more easily. Akira tells Nanao again that he really had nothing to do with Takai's Death and that he can confidently tell him that he's telling the truth, while he clenches both his hands into fists. While Akira's face gives a sparking expression, Nana tells Nanao that if he's lying, then he is doing a terrible job of it, while Nanao is dumbfounded by Akira's honest behavior. He concludes that they can assume that Takai must've have caused his own death, and while stretching tells Nana and Akira that they can leave and go back to work and Nana responds, "Yes, sir.". She then bows telling Nanao that she's sorry that they weren't more useful to him, and Akira also bows at Nanao as he leaves the room.

Takai Incident Debate with Tsuruoka[]

Nanao visits Tsuruoka at Rin's cell.

Nanao visits Tsuruoka at Rin's cell.

Nanao later visits Tsuruoka at Rin's prison cell and ask him that he's back him again. Tsuruoka explains to him that he wanted to see if she really lost using her talent and that he is using himself as a guinea pig to test it. If she can still use her talent, he expects her to try to kill him first and that she does have the strength to do it, and Nanao is surprised that he volunteered to do this himself. Tsuruoka then tells Nanao that he heard that there was an incident, and Nanao explains that one of his men got drunk and fell to his death. He surmises that Nana was involved, and Nanao asks how he knows that. Tsuruoka says to him, "You stuck your nose in trivial matters because you wanted to see Hiiragi again.", and Nanao annoyed tells him that's ridiculous and that he was just doing his job. Tsuruoka asks him for a report of today's incident. After Nanao filled him in on everything that happened, he adds that since there are no suspects, they're saying that Takai got drunk and fell on his own, and Tsuruoka responds describing the event as a truly trivial matter. He asks Tsuruoka if it help him pass the time, and he says while Takai's death was of no importance, he says however, "It amuses me to watch Hiiragi manipulate you.".

Tsuruoka tells Nanao the man that he saw fall wasn't Takai.

Tsuruoka tells Nanao the man that he saw fall wasn't Takai.

Nanao perplexed by his statement asks him what's he talking about. Tsuruoka asks him when he was summoned to the room on the lower floor, what was Nana doing. Nanao replies that she was doing nothing in particular and he thinks she was looking out the window. Tsuruoka deduces that she must have known that someone would fall from above and she wanted Nanao to witness it. He asks Tsuruoka why, and he answers to create an ironclad alibi. He goes on to say that someone on the floor below couldn't possibly have push someone from the floor above, and Nanao say that he knows that. Nanao asks if he trying to say that Nana killed Takai after all, but Tsuruoka clarifies to him that Nana doesn't have a motive and that it makes more sense to assume that she did it to protect Akira Itakura, a talented with a motive.vNanao states to him that he couldn't have done it either because he was with them, but Tsuruoka says, "The body you saw fall wasn't Takai.". Nanao confused asks him, "What?", and Tsuruoka explains that someone other than Takai fell and that since Nanao only saw for an instant, he couldn't get a good look at their face. Nanao admits it's true that he only saw the back of their head and didn't see their face, and Tsuruoka comments that they were careful. However, Nanao tells him that they already checked the body once they were back on the ground and the body was definitely Takai's with all of his men saying that it was him. Tsuruoka's comeback is that they switched the bodies, while Nanao was descending down the stairs. He continues on with that the body fell in an unmaintained yard overgrown with weeds and that they probably hid Takai's body beforehand. Nanao is bewildered as he asks Tsuruoka if he trying to say that Takai died before they saw him fall. He then asks Tsuruoka of the body that fell and questions what exactly they saw. Tsuruoka makes a devilish grin expression as he says, "Probably the corpse of someone else."(Talking about Rin's older brother, Kyouya), while watching Rin's reaction to their conversation.

Nanao is satisfied that he won the argument and leaves the prison cell.

Nanao is satisfied that he won the argument and leaves Tsuruoka alone with Rin in the prison cell.

Nanao declares that's impossible and tells Tsuruoka the scenario that he thinks Tsuruoka is trying to imply. Nanao explains someone dropped a fake corpse from the tenth floor and they witnessed that. While we were descending the stairs, someone on the ground swapped the fallen body with Takai's, that had been hidden beforehand. Nanao reminds him that there was no one inside the building and also question him on who could have dropped the fake body. He further points out that they searched the backyard pretty thoroughly and if his theory's correct, they should've found the fake corpse in addition to Takai's. Nanao then proceed with asking Tsuruoka if he trying to say someone on the ground fled while carrying a heavy corpse and says to him, "Someone that suspicious would've been apprehended", as he continues to disagree with him about the case. As Tsuruoka sighs getting tired from hearing Nanao's debate, he tells him that's enough and that he can go now. Nanao then says to Tsuruoka, "Even you make mistakes sometimes.", feeling satisfied that he won the argument as he leaves the prison.

Accidently kills a Soldier over a Watch[]

Nanao demands the watch from the soldier.

Nanao demands the wristwatch from the soldier.

While Nanao is walking on the streets, a soldier runs up behind him and calls out to him. The soldier acts friendly towards him as he shows him the stash inside a grocery bag that he looted from someone. Nanao at first doesn't show any interest in it and ask the soldier what if the person was an aggressive individual, but the soldier informs him that it was just an old lady and Nanao replies, "I see.". He then asks Nanao, "There aren't any Adults with Talents, are there?", and Nanao answers him that's what people say. He then asks him another question, "Do people lose the ability to use their Talents with age?", and Nanao replies, "If only that were the case". As the soldier pulls out a "wristwatch" from the bag, Nanao notices it and remembers how it looks exactly the same watch his father bought him before he lost it on the island. The watch triggers him to have a mental episode due to him also remember accidently killing his father and demands the soldier to hand it over, but the soldier didn't hear what he said. Nanao reaches his right hand out at him as he yells, "HAND IT OVER!". He uses his talent when he makes eye contact with him causing the soldier overwhelming head pain and screaming, while Nanao grabs the watch from him.

Nanao terrified of mutating into an Enemy of Humanity.

Nanao terrified of mutating into an "Enemy of Humanity".

Afterwards, he then kicks the soldier's chin while he's on the ground telling him not to die and that it's too soon. Nanao says with an angry expression to the soldier, "Make me feel guilty about what I've done.". He realizes that the man is in fact dead and the state of his face with blood coming down his nose, reminds him exactly what happened with his father. As Nanao comes to grips with what he just done, he looks at his right hand holding the watch he took and starts trembling in fear. As his knees bent to the ground while on top of the soldier's dead body and uses his left hand to cover his face except his eyes, he says to himself, "I'm Scared...", admitting that he's afraid that one day he'll mutate into "An Enemy of Humanity".

Nana's Three-Year Late Apology[]

Nanao in his office is informed from soldiers that someone contacted the outside world, outside of work hours. They tell him that they are currently trying to determine who they contacted. He asks them what the culprit discussed, and a soldier reply that they're also still figuring that part out as well. He scolds them that they're the ones that be in troubled if the world finds out what they do at the managed camp. However, he says that he's glad they reported to him quickly and to take care of the issue, and the soldiers salute saying, "YES SIR!". After the soldiers leaves his office, they talk how though Nanao seemed relax, he takes his job seriously and wonders why he is siding with them when he's a talented individual. But one of them says that it doesn't matter and that if they don't do exactly Nanao tells them to do, they'll be killed. He further tells them last night about Nanao had killed a soldier which shocks them, and Nana walks pass them as they're still talking.

Nana finally apologizes to Nanao for betraying and trying to kill him.

Nana finally apologizes to Nanao for her betrayal and trying to kill him on the island three years ago.

She knocks on Nanao's office door and ask him does he have a minute, while he's currently looking through some work papers. He asks her what is it that she wants. She said that it's a personal matter. Nanao remembers that she wanted to apologize to him for something and tells her to come inside. She notices that he looks busy, and he comments to her on can she believed he's the same person who used to read comics in class. As he read the work papers, he says it brings back memories of how he was a loser and Nana was the one who gave him the courage to break up Moguo and Seiya's fight. He mentions on how now that he thinks about it, he realizes it was all a charade, but he was serious about it. Nana tells him that back when they first met, she believed that Nanao had the ability to unify others and receive their support, He says thank you and asks her if that was the reason she decided to kill him. Nana bows and apologize to Nanao for trying to kill him and betraying his straight-forward feelings and hopes that he can accept her apology. He tells her sure and that he forgives her. He then tells her to raise her head and sees Nana's eyes full of guilt and remorse. He proceeds to tell her that he's glad that she doesn't look relieved and said that it was her job, while mentioning that she killed plenty of people besides him. He adds that she'll live the rest of her life making that depressing expression. He admits that he jealous of her because he done lots of bad things but stopped caring about them immediately. He also adds not only that, but now he wants to do even more bad things. He informs her that it's something that Tsuruoka told him about how when humans see others in distress, their brains are flooded with endorphins. He explains that it drives people to hurt others for no benefit at all and they tend to choose victims who are either weak or unlikely to fight back. This phenomenon is especially strong among talent individuals and comes from the frontal lobe and says that there's something wrong with that part of their brains that controls their ability to reason and be sociable. This makes him realizes that there were a lot of odd people at school on the island. He concludes that talented individuals are balls of malice and monsters. Curious by his way of thinking, Nana asks if it was her actions that made him this way. While he does acknowledge that she might have been the reason that he's changed, he states that all talented individuals end up this way eventually sooner or later. She asks if he's trying to say that all talented individuals are evil, and Nanao answers yeah. He explains that as far as normal humans are concerned with, talented individuals like himself are a threat and that's why they're isolated here in the managed camp from the outside world. She gives him her opinion as a watchman that she believes that the talented individuals being kept here are being mistreated more than necessary, and he asks what she so worried about. She says, "Fostering too much resentment could cause a riot.", and he replies that fine since they are evil. She adds that it not just talented individuals who are suffering from theft and violence but also their members of their family who are talentless as well. Nanao says to her while smirking, "They're the family of evil people. It can't be helped.". Nana thinking to herself that Nanao sounds oddly confident and thought he was being manipulated by Tsuruoka like she was, but more than that she senses something immeasurable from Nanao.

Nanao making physically close direct eye contact to Nana, which intimidates her.

Nanao then puts the work papers down and points out that there were riots during the three years Nana was in solitary confinement, but he shut them all up. He speculates that the incident might occur when Rin Onodera is executed. He asks Nana a question if she and him are facing the same direction. Confused, she asks what he means by that. He informs her of the debate he had with Tsuruoka and tells her that according to him when Takai fell to his death, Nana might have a hand in that. As he gets up from his seat, he tells her naturally he trusts her but says that if she is lying than that would make her apology to him just now a lie too and says,"Isn't that right?". He turns around and approaches her and ask, "We're friends, aren't we?", while very close to her face making direct eye contact which intimidates her. He chuckles a bit while stating that it would be putting it mildly to say that he's a terrible person, but she tells him no. She informs him that when she found out that he was still alive at first, she was glad. As she clenches her hand, she tells him however that when she learned that he was secretly acting as their enemy, that she became immediately afraid of him and thought that her crimes had materialized and come to retaliate against her. She says in the end that she simply wanted to be forgiven.

Nana grabs Nanao's hand.

Nana grabs Nanao's hand.

Nana admits that all though Nanao has certainly changed, he's still an honest person in contrast to herself who is a liar and tells him from her perspective he's radiant. She tells though that she likes for them to be friends, she says to him, "Currently, we may be facing different directions.". He asks her shouldn't she have lied about that. He tells her that it's too late now. While his hand starts crumbling the work papers on his desk, he mentions how three years ago on the island, she had him completely fooled. He asks her what this is and what is she planning as he menacingly glares at her. He tells Nana that he wants to keep the Talented Individuals who are the "Enemies of Humanity" Segregated from Society and asks her if she trying to say that she don't. She then points out Nanao that isn't he a talented as well, and he furiously yells yes and that's why he knows how evil talented individuals can be, while fiercely crumbling the work papers on his desk even more. Nana perplexed asks what he means by that, but he tells her she talentless so it's none of her business. She keeps pressuring him saying stop deflecting and asks why he's so irritated and what is he struggling with, but he tells her to shut up. Nana approaches him and grabs his hand on the desk asks Nanao, "Isn't there anything I can do to help you?!". Before anything else can happen, a soldier knocks on the door and informs Nanao that Tsuruoka is calling for him to come to the basement immediately. He tells him that he'll be right there. As Nanao walking away, he tells Nana that as a loyal watchman he can't ignore what she just said to him and when he comes back, she going to tell him all about it and left her alone in his office. Nana thinking to herself that she had to say it and wonders why Nanao hate talented individuals so much and what is he so afraid of as she looks at Nanao's crumbled work papers on his desk.

Being asked to "Die"[]

At Rin's prison cell, she learns from Tsuruoka that talented individuals become monsters, but she doesn't believe him and says that she never heard of such a thing happening. Tsuruoka acknowledges her disbelief, and that the government should have announced on the national airwaves that someone's talented son became a monster. Rin speculates that no has the guts to speak out, because they're all too scared that it will cause a panic. Nanao walks into the room asks Tsuruoka what's going on and if Rin regain her talent back. Tsuruoka addresses him and tells Nanao they made a lot of progress with their research thanks to his cooperation and that they're nearly there.

Nanao furiously yells at Tsuruoka demanding to know if he'll turn into an monster soon.

Nanao furiously yells at Tsuruoka demanding to know if he'll turn into a monster soon.

Nanao asks if Tsuruoka is asking him to subject himself to another annoying medical exam and wish that they stop drawing blood from him since it makes him dizzy. Tsuruoka informs him that it seems that there's something wrong with the prefrontal cortex of talented individuals, and all the members of the research team believe the key to creating a cure can be found there. Nanao deduces that they want to dig through his brain this time, and Tsuruoka says, "Yes.". He tells Tsuruoka that would kill him, and Tsuruoka, "Yes, it would.". After a moment of silence, Nanao astounded realizes what he's being asked to do and asks Tsuruoka, "You're joking, right?". He also asks him, "Why me?". Tsuruoka answers that there are plenty of other test subjects besides Nanao in the camp, however he been told that "those whose symptoms are more advanced yield more practical results-". This made Nanao angry as he yells at Tsuruoka asking if he'll turn into one of those monsters soon, but he doesn't answer his question. Tsuruoka tells him that this would be an act of heroism to giving his own life for others and that he's sure Nanao's father would be proud of him, as Nanao continues processing the situation he's in. Rin tells Nanao to not listen to Tsuruoka and that he shouldn't trust anyone who pressure others into sacrificing their own lives. As he looks at her and contemplates what she just said, he asks Tsuruoka if he could at least give him time to think about it, and he says of course and that if he intended to force him, he wouldn't have told him about it beforehand.

He tells Nanao that an escape attempt will be made soon, and he needs his strength to keep the talented individuals trapped, which left Nanao confused about what he means by escape attempt. Tsuruoka proceeds to tell him that Kyouya Onodera and Nana worked together to help Akira a talented who lurks in shadows, and at the same time Moe Makabe and Kiyomi Shimizu surrendered themselves to the camp, and this makes him believe that Kiyomi has a partner. Finally, he concludes his theory by mentioning that someone used a computer to contact the outside world unofficially. Nanao asks if he thinks Sachiko will show up, and Tsuruoka tells him that he's the only one who can stop her teleportation ability and Nanao says,"I got it". However, Tsuruoka orders him to first apprehend Nana immediately as she cannot be allowed to run loose any longer for Nanao's entertainment. Nanao tells him that he'll decide what happens to Nana, and Tsuruoka is stunned that he is disobeying his orders. Nanao tells him now that he moved up in a higher job position, he no longer works at the Managed Camp and Nanao practically runs the place now. Tsuruoka asks why he won't capture Nana, and he tells him to not get upset and that they don't need to worry about one talentless girl. Tsuruoka reminds him that she isn't alone anymore and questions if he doesn't understand that she now using talented individuals, but Nanao just thanks him for the warning. Tsuruoka tells him that seeking salvation from Nana is pointless and of how he told him numerous times that only a few individuals should know about the monstrous transformation, and Nanao says that it's to maintain order. Tsuruoka proceeds talking about if the public finds out, then talented individuals will be seized with uneasiness and begin demanding the truth. He also points out that once they learn there's no vaccine or cure, there will be an uprising on the level of a civil war will break out just like long ago.

Nanao threatens Tsuruoka.

Nanao threatens Tsuruoka.

Nanao ask Tsuruoka that since he learned from the past, he now controls the information. He also mentions how Tsuruoka burned lots of books and had killed everyone who spoke out about that period, which resulted in monsters known as “Enemies of Humanity” to exist and that nobody knows that’s the final form of talented individuals. Tsuruoka then tells Nanao what he said about there's nothing a single Talentless Girl can do about it, and Nanao says okay. Tsuruoka warns him to not get ahead of yourself and that he is authorized to call upon outside forces in case of emergencies and have disciplined soldiers unlike the low-Level type that are assigned to work here. Nanao asks him that thousands of people died just to capture one of those monsters, and while giving a menacing glare asks warns Tsuruoka, “If you keep threatening me, I might consider turning into one.”, which made him intimidated. As Nanao chuckles, Tsuruoka asks him what's so funny. Nanao replies that he claims that he's trying to save the world, but in the end, he always thought a talentless man like Tsuruoka just wanted to take away talented individuals’ powers to bully them. Nanao proceeds that after seeing that serious expression on his face, he realizes Tsuruoka is actually terrified of those monsters. He tells him good luck with his research as he leaves the prison cell.

Back in his office, he makes a joke about letting them scoop out his brains and thinks that Tsuruoka is merciless but admits that it's not as though he trusted him to begin with. He somewhat recalls accidently killing his dad and says as someone like him who's done plenty of terrible things, it's a decent way to die. While thinking of the alternative of him becoming one of those monsters, he remembers what Nana said to him earlier and her holding his hand in his office. He grips his arm while giving a serious expression on his face.

Final Showdown against Nana[]

Nanao and Nana Final Showdown Begins.

Nanao and Nana Final Showdown Begins.

After Nana finishes talking to Kyouya about what happened between her and Nanao in his office earlier and about the possibility that she might need to kill him, she returns back to her apartment building to go back into her room. She is thinking about how they'll fight against Nanao but questions if her and his interests are really not aligned and wonders why he's so determined to reject talented individuals. As she speaks out and says that she still wants to help Nanao, but out of nowhere she hears the air says, "Then Die.", and it reveals to be Nanao himself. As he turns off his invisibility and place his hand on her right shoulder, Nana turns around and makes eye contact with him and Nanao uses his talent to induces mental head pain on her. While Nana is writhing in pain, he informs her that she's suspected of disloyalty and that setting the talented individuals free is a ridiculous idea, so he says to her, “So for the sake of Humanity I will kill you.”, and mentions how that's what she once told him. Still in immense pain, Nana confused asks saying, "I Did…?", but quickly remembers the time she first tried to kill him by pushing him off the cliff on the island three years ago. Nanao then tells her, “Let’s Pick Up where we left off.”, as he begins their final confrontation.

While under the pain effects of his talent, Nana asks Nanao what happened to him three years ago on the island, after he fell. He asks if she is asking for another round. She says no and begs him to please listen to her and speculates didn't he come here alone without any subordinates because he had something secret to tell her, while remembering Nanao leaving her alone in his office to meet up with Tsuruoka earlier. Nanao irritated asks, "What made you so soft? You used to be merciless.". He theorizes that it Moe but realizes that it's because of Michiru, which cause Nana to be shocked to hear her name. While she recalls Michiru sacrificing her life for hers, Nanao informs Nana that he heard about it from Tsuruoka that she died bringing her back to life, which resulted in her to begin sympathizing with the talented. Nanao points out to her that while he takes no pleasure in saying this, "But in the end if you die without having accomplished anything-Then Michiru-chan will have died in vain.". Nana asks him, "Should you be doing that?", which left Nanao confused. She reminds him that he needs to make eye contact with someone to activate his talent's ability. Though she admits that he caught her off guard earlier but points out that she still alive and questions Nanao that shouldn't he use his talent on her again to finish her off. Nanao looking pleased that she starting to show signs of fighting back, asks her does this mean she's finally getting into the gear of things. As he walks towards her, Nana grits her teeth and charges at him, but Nanao dodges her attempt, and she falls on the ground. He gives a brief summary of how using his talent to induce pain on people would normally hurts so badly, that it feels like their head's being split open. He speculates that since she tried provoking him like nothing was wrong, he thought something must be up. He proceeds telling her while she is breathing heavily on the ground that he accidentally dispelled his pain inducing ability when he dodged her charge. As one of the linear light bulbs in the room they're in suddenly stops working, he uses his talent to turn invisible behind Nana and says to her, "Now then. Shall we get started?", starting some kind of cat and mouse game with her. She runs to the exit and goes outside on the streets. While she still running, Nanao watches her from behind.

She eventually goes inside an abandoned restaurant and smashes the plates on the table to the floor. Nanao arrives at the entrance door and comments how she made a mess of the place. He deduces that since she can't see him, she's trying to use sound to find him. While stepping on the broken plates making creak sounds, he mentions that Tsuruoka trained Nana to be an assassin and admits that she got his ability beat and speculates that if they were to get into a physical fight, she might win. Nana asks him again of what's the reason he isn't having her arrested and theorizes that there's something he wants to discuss privately, but he rebuffs her answering that he wanted to be alone with her because he'll be angry if someone else shot her dead. She asks Nanao if he set on having them kill each other, but he tells her he don't have a future which left Nana confused. He proceeds talking how she screwed up his life and how she changed for the better and he changed for the worse, for which he can't forgive her for. He then states that it doesn't matter anymore and all he wants is clear his head by killing her with his own two hands, and after that he'll kill off her friends one by one. As Nana hears Nanao stepped on a broken plate that's very close to her on her left side, she runs away grabbing a bag of sugar and leaves through the back exit door. As she is running back on the streets again, Nanao laughs as he compliments her evasive efforts and smirks saying, "You must be planning something, right? That's how you've always killed people, huh?", while he leans on the outside wall as he watches Nana flee.

Later, Nanao is walking on the sidewalk looking for Nana. He finds it odd that he still hasn't found her yet, even though he thought she went this way in the area he's searching right now Unknown to him that Shizuka and Nana are hiding behind a car across the street from him, while Shizuka is covering Nana's mouth with her hand. After he leaves, Shizuka grabs Nana's hand so they can escape and met up with Kyouya and the other talented.

Erased Alternate Timeline[]

In this alternate timeline, Nanao successfully killed Nana in the abandoned disco shop place Shizuka picked Nana up from earlier. Shizuka woke up in the middle of the night because she felt uneasy and didn't find Nana in the bed underneath hers. She got a bad feeling something bad happened and look all over to find her. After wasting a lot of time, she noticed a commotion in the area she was at and followed some soldiers to the shop Nana was in. When she went inside and shoves through the soldiers blocking her way, she found Nana on the ground with Nanao standing over her. She runs towards Nana and grabs her yelling "BOSS!!!". While fading in and out of consciousness, Nana tells Shizuka, "It's because I considered killing him. I considered killing Nakajima-san.". Her last words are, "In the end I was just a murderer", and dies in Shizuka's arms. Shizuka yells out to her repeatedly and asking what's going on and what happened here. While Shizuka is in distress over the situation, Nanao walks towards a soldier, grabs the gun on his hip, and then points the gun to his head and pulls the trigger behind Shizuka, committing suicide. She turns arounds and watches his dead body fall on top of Nana's corpse, which left her completely horrified at what just occurred. Shizuka uses her talent to go back a day and when she saw Nana still not in her bed when she woke up, she immediately contacted Kyouya and the gang to help found Nana before it was too late. She successfully founds Nana in time before Nanao kills her and thus erased the events that happened in this timeline.

Back to Chasing Nana[]

While still looking for Nana outside, he asks a soldier if he seen Nana Hiiragi and he says no. Nanao asks him if he see her tell him. However, Nana shortly showed up almost immediately and tells Nanao that she right here hiding behind a building with her back turned in front of him, while also holding on the sugar bag she grabbed earlier. Nanao tells the soldier to forget what he just told him as he walks pass him. He then uses his talent to turn invisible and says, "Now then. Shall we continue?", resuming the chase. While walking invisible behind Nana, he asks her how far she will run, and she then went from walking to dashing off the distance with Nanao doing the same in pursuit of her.

Nana arrives in front of an abandoned apartment and hears Nanao's steps behind her, which cause her to run inside the building and use an elevator. While Nanao stands in front of the elevator and finishes counting its dings to see that Nana is on the tenth floor, he thinks that he can't prevent his shoes from making noise and realizes this apartment has carpet in the hallways. He chuckles as he takes off his military black boot shoes, so he can walk only with his socks on. Nana is in the hallways and place sugar over the carpet floor. Nanao starts walking towards her but notices the sugar on the floor when he come close to it. He then remembers her grabbing a bag of sugar or something from the restaurant kitchen they were in and deduces that she must've taken it to use when she couldn't rely on sound to hear him approaching, which he was close to almost stepping in. However, he theorizes that she didn't have enough sugar as he can see that it's not like there's nowhere, he can step. He steps around the sugar and arrives at where Nana is. When he thinks about ending this, for some unknown reason Nana starts running away into the room to her right. Nanao confused as to how she noticed him.

When he follows her into the room, she opens the window door curtains and sees Nanao on the door mirror. He admits that while he doesn't know how she noticed him approaching her, he does see that she wanted to lure him in the room and that it'll be difficult for him to attack her in here. She asks him again to please let her help him, and he just asks she still saying that. Nana grits her teeth and then says to him, “Aren't you planning to kill me and then kill yourself?”, which completely baffles Nanao wondering how she knows about that. She speculates that something pushed him to that point and wants to know what it is. As his eyes gives off a solemn despairing expression, says that if she's that insistent then fine and he'll at least speak with her. However, he tells her, "Face this way.", which makes her hesitant. He tells her to speak face-to-face to him and that if you trust him, she should be able to do that, right. After some thinking, Nana turns arounds to face him. As they stare at each other eyes for a while, Nanao suddenly starts laughing out loud. He apologizes for his outburst and that he just thought about how she once tricked him the same way and couldn’t help himself. As he whips away a tear in his right eye while still laughing, he tells her that he trusted her and that he never imagined that she would kill him. He then uses his talent to stop her body from moving and walks behind her saying that he gets that she regrets killing him and the other talented, and that sometimes the feeling's too much to bear.

Nanao smiles as he tells Nana to die for humanity before she falls.

Nanao smiles as he tells Nana to die for humanity before she falls.

He opens the window door to the balcony and tells her to let those feelings crush her, while he also tells her to look and asks if she can't see that "cliff" over there (Created an illusionary cliff in her mind of the same cliff on the island where she pushed him off of.). She turns her head around and Nanao instructs her to come with him and when they both arrive at the "cliff's edge", he declares to Nana that there's nothing left between them. He proceeds with saying not trust, not anything and that their relationship ended that moment three years ago. He taps on her right shoulder, and she steps on top of the fence poll. She turns her head around to Nanao, he smiles saying, "Now Die. For Humanity", and she falls down into the cliff's depths. Back to the real apartment, as he about to walk away, he notices a strong wind outside and looks down from the balcony to it coming underneath Nana. She gets caught by Fuuko, Moe, and Moguo on the balcony four floors below Nanao. Kyouya also present, chides her for not jumping right away. While Nanao remains surprised from what just happened, he notices Akira coming out of the shadows behind him and closes the door to the room door on Nanao and tells Kiyomi to do it now. Nanao rushes to the door and tries to open it, but it won't budge and realizes that he's trapped inside the room. Nana then shouts out to Nanao from the balcony saying, "IT'S NOT OVER. BECAUSE YOU ARE ALIVE!". When he comes outside his room's balcony to look down below at Nana, she grits her teeth and continues shouting at him saying, "AND I WANT YOU TO KEEP ON LIVING!", while crying. This left Nanao perplexed from her behavior.

Nanao's Intervention[]

Still on the balcony, he glances to his right and see an emergency ladder escape hatch on the floor. However, Kyouya informs him that they had Moguo and Fuuko use their talents beforehand to break the escape hatch and the door he tried to open is sealed from the outside by Kiyomi's talent and concludes to Nanao that he's trapped in the room. He asks Kyouya why he trapped him, and he answers that they want to talk to him without being seen by him. As Nana grips the balcony's railing, she tells Nanao to stay on his room's balcony and that they're going to the room next door to his. When they arrived, Moguo goes to their room's balcony grabbing on to the railing and tells Nanao that he's sorry, while Nanao just stands silently as he listens to him talk on the other side of the wall. Moguo proceeds telling him that he thinks Nanao is mad right now because he used to make fun of him and admits that he always to apologizes to him. He realizes from being treated like an insect by Nanao and the soldiers in the camp, that he used to do the same thing to him at school on the island. Next, Seiya, confesses that he used to ignore Nanao, but quickly changes his statement and notes that he wasn't interested in anything other than himself. He goes on of how despite that trait, he had friends who worry about him. The next person is Kiyomi, and she asks Nanao to please apologize for what he did to her, regarding him using his talent to brainwash her into killing Hikaru. She continues how Nanao manipulated her into killing people and that she been afraid of him ever since, but states that she doesn't want to be afraid anymore and doesn't want Sachiko to protect her all the time, so she wants to face him once more for her own sake, while squeezing her hands together. She is comforted by Moe from behind who tells Nanao that though she doesn't know him very well, she would like to see him smile instead of scowling. Shizuka calls him "Chief Nakajima" and asks him to help them. She tells him that she doesn't know what Nana did to him long ago but informs Nanao that she seems to regret it. Then Akira moronically asks Nanao isn't he a talented like them as he just now realizing that and wonders why he sided with the army, while also commenting how that doesn't make sense. Shizuka irritated from his idiotic questions, choke holds Akira with her arm around his neck to drag him away from the balcony and tells him to shut up since he still a newcomer, while everyone except for Nana awkwardly watches them.

Afterwards, Kyouya points out to Nanao that as he has heard, all of them want to try getting along with him again and hopes that he understands that it's not just because he is standing in their way of escaping from the camp. Kyouya also bluntly tells him that he has no personal feelings about him either (Due to limited two-year memory retention from his immortality talent, doesn't remember investigating Nanao's disappearance or later on trying to figure out his "killer's identity (AKA: Nana Hiiragi)" on the island three years ago.). However, he does note to Nanao that chasing Nana around in the middle of the night by himself with the intention of killing her isn't normal and asks him what's driven him into a corner and expresses that he wants to know. He also speculates that it also the reason Nanao is opposing them. Finally, Nana talks to Nanao and tells him that she intended to face him alone, but the gang jumped in to save her. She mentions that despite all the crimes she committed, there were still people willing to save her, which made Nanao remember killing his father and cause him to grip his arm. She points out that she should been standing where he is right now and that he's a talented that others should've gathered around to support. She finishes her speech by telling him that it's not too late and begs him to please join their side, which causes Nanao to be hesitant.

After listening to everybody, Nanao finally speaks and asks Nana how she knew he was approaching her in the hallway earlier. He continues saying before he entered the room he is in, he made sure to remove his shoes so he wouldn't make a sound as he approached her and how he was also careful not to step on the sugar covered floor so he wouldn't leave any footprints, so how did she find out. Kyouya answers it was because of the prisms of ice made from Seiya was attached on the ceiling that would function as mirrors. He further explains how Kiyomi use her cobweb talent to attach the prisms to the ceiling and Akira use his talent to hide in Nana's shadow and let her know when Nanao approached her. Akira says that he stuck his finger out of her shadow to gently press on her right ankle and was told that would be the signal. Nanao realizes that the sugar on the floor wasn't even important. Kyouya clarify that there wasn't enough to cover the entire hallway floor and admits that they would have been lucky if he stepped in it. He tells Nanao that they mainly used the sugar on the floor as a diversion to draw his eyes away from the ceiling and towards the floor instead, to which Nanao replies, "I see...". Nanao then gives a review of what happen afterwards of how Fuuko used her wind talent to catch Nana after she fell and while he was stunned, Kiyomi use her talent to glue the door to his room shut from the outside. He concludes that they all work together to beat him, while making a saddening face. Nana tells him that they wanted to create a place where they could talk to him, and Nanao answers that he knows that. He acknowledges that he was wrong about her. As he blinks his eyes reminiscing Nana all alone on the island and smiling by herself, he says to Nana, "You aren't alone anymore.". Nana grabs on the balcony railing and calls his name out, thinking she finally gone through to him.

However, Nanao tells her, "But you should've fought alone.", while expressing a very sinister smile and Nana is taken aback from his respond. Nanao then walks towards the sealed room door and places his hand on it. He asks Nana has she forgotten that his talent allows him to nullify other talented people's abilities. He admits back on then on the island, he nullified Moguo's fireball by touching it directly with his hands. However, he sarcastically questions Nana if she really thinks his talent hadn't changed or grown since then and that does she think herself and the gang would be safe if they applied sticky threads made using a talent to the outside of the room door, since he couldn't touch them from the inside. While smirking and chuckling, he assumes that they're speaking to him from the balcony of the room next door, so they wouldn't make eye contact with him. However, he says to them, "Did I ever say that I have to make eye contact with people to control them?", and uses his pain inducing ability on Nana and the rest of the gang while still inside the other room, causing them intense painful headaches. He admits that while it's certainly more effective when he makes eye contact but tells them that this is his talent's truth abilities. He speculates that they made it this far based on Nana's tricks and logical reasoning but informs them that this is a talent they're talking about here and saying, "A terrifying power wielded only by monsters.", regarding talents and the talented individuals who possess them. While Nana and the gang are still writhing in agony, Nanao opens the door to their room and comes in saying, "Now then. Bring it on.".

Fighting the Other Talented and Nana[]

While still experiencing his pain ability, Nana astounded asks Nanao that he can hurt people, without making eye contact. While walking further into the room towards the gang, Nanao responds what made her think that he had to make eye contact and theorizes that it's easier to understand that way. He also mentions his nullification ability and asks Nana what made her also think that he had to touch something for it to work. He acknowledges that directly looking at or touching something certainly makes it easier for him to use his talent but explains that he can extend the effects of it over a broad area and tells the gang to not ask him how he do it because it's a talent after all. While chuckling, he comments that they're all suffering right now as he is referring to everyone in the entire camp. Nana shocked by this, asks Nanao if his reach extends that far, and he claims that if he wanted to, he could affect the entire region, the country, and could even extend his talent across the entire world. While recalling all the dead talented classmates that Nana have fought up against, he informs Nana that until now she used the weaknesses, drawbacks, personalities, and assumptions of talented individuals against them, and points out that she used logic to defeat all kinds of enemies and how she has always done it alone. However, he explains she now using talented individuals themselves and how he wanted to face off against the killer Nana used to be, but now he is disappointed. He tells her that he won't hold back anymore and that if Nana is determined to fight this way, then he'll tell her saying, "Talents are unreasonable and incomprehensible. You can't beat them with wits, courage, and friendship.".

Fuuko then starts using her talent to create a tornado of wind outside the balcony they're on and tells everyone to run and ride the wind, but Nanao looks at her and nullifies her wind and then makes eye contact with her using his talent to knock her unconscious. Nanao reminds everyone that he can nullify talents without touching them and asks who's next. However, Kyouya charges and grabs onto Nanao and tells everyone to run, while he pushes Nanao on the floor. While Nanao uses his pain inducing ability again on Kyouya, he addresses Kyouya as "Kyouya-Kun the immortal" and mentions that he can even nullify his talent and that at this rate, even he can die. Kyouya rebuffs him that he won't die and brings up that when Nanao nullified Fuuko's talent just now, the pain stopped briefly. He deduces that Nanao can't simultaneously emit his painful waves and nullify others' talents at the same time. So, he points out to Nanao that he has to emit his pain waves to kill him, but he has to nullify his immortality talent to finish him off and asks him which one will he start with? Nanao thinking to himself while making an angry expression, "...WHY YOU!", at Kyouya. Nana shouts at Kyouya asking what about him. While looking at an unconscious Fuuko, Kyouya tells Nana that he can't leave Fuuko by herself. As Nana watch Seiya and Kiyomi trying to wake Fuuko up, she turns arounds and tells everyone to let's go, but Nanao yells at them, "YOU'RE NOT GETTING AWAY!", then uses his pain waves to try to stop them from leaving the room. As Kyouya gets further on top of Nanao, he informs Nana that he theorizes that Nanao doesn't want them to escape because his talents are less effective at a distance and that they work at their best when Nanao looks directly into people's eyes. Kyouya further points out that talented individuals aren't monsters with unlimited powers and that if talents were truly perfect, then he wouldn't have forgotten about his sister. Nana and the gang manage to run out of the room, while Kyouya is heard screaming in pain as they continue their escape.

The Showdown's Conclusion[]

Nanao walking along side Nana and his other classmates at school on the island and remembers seeing Nana crying.

Nanao imagines walking along side Nana and his other classmates at school on the island and remembers seeing Nana crying.

Sometime later, Nanao manages to immobilize Kyouya with his pain inducing talent and comments that he finally shut up. He continues talking that even though Kyouya may be immortal, he can still feel pain and how he could nullify his immortality now and beat him to death. However, Kyouya says to Nanao while he's busy doing that, Nana and the others will have fled far away. Nanao tells him that he doesn't think he will because he thinks that him and Fuuko will make good test samples and tells Kyouya that once he's dead it'll be up to him. Nanao leaves the room and Kyouya is confused by what Nanao means by once he's dead. While walking the sugar covered floor hallway, Nanao thinks to himself that once he kills Nana, he'll accept Tsuruoka's proposal and die. Suddenly, Nanao starts getting nauseated and covers his mouth when he felt like he was going to vomit. He wonders why he's suddenly feeling sick but retorts that it doesn't matter what it is. While recalling Nana talking, he thinks once he kills her, he'll feel better and mentions that she tricked and lied to him. While going down inside an elevator, for some reason he vividly imagines himself walking along side Nana and his other classmates Seiya, Moguo, Kyouya, Fuuko, and Kiyomi at school on the island and remembers seeing Nana crying on the balcony earlier.

As he exits the elevator, he puts his military black boot shoes back on his feet and walks out the apartment building to see Nana and the gang. He says that he can't believe that they all waited for him and threateningly says,"YOU MUST ALL WANT TO DIE TOGETHER!". Moguo creates a fire ball in his right hand and throws it at Nanao, but he nullifies it before it could even touch him. Nana realizes that Kyouya was right about Nanao can't simultaneously use his pain waves and nullification talents. Nanao asks Nana what good does knowing do and informs her that he can instantly swap between them. As Moguo starts creating another fire ball, Nana tells Nanao that they'll keep up the pressure, so he has to keep nullifying and Seiya creates an ice spike shard and hands it to Nana. She tells Nanao that while he's nullifying, he can't use any other ability and concludes that he's no different from a talentless individual. Nanao does admits she right and that if he takes his time, he might be beaten when he's forced to swap talents. He also deduces that Nana's plan is to stab him with the ice shard in her hand and kill him with a single blow. While smiling, he tells Nana he loves her plan and asks if she's finally back to being her old self.

Nanao loses his will to live.

Nanao loses his will to live.

Moguo warns Nanao as he throws another fire ball at him, and he again nullifies it, but then sees Nana running straight towards him with the ice weapon. Nanao uses his talent on Nana as he makes eye contact with her, and also notices that there's cobwebs made from Kiyomi under his feet that's preventing him from moving and uses his talent nullification to get rid of them, but this bought Nana time to close in on him. As she about to stab him, Nanao thinking to himself that impossible for her to stab him now because she is about to fight him "without a weapon", and that he'll ignore the others and kill her right away. Still in thought, he thinks Nana was a lone wolf until she allied herself with the talented and claims when he's up against talented individuals, he is unstoppable. He goes on that he can easily make a chunk of ice vanish because it was made from using a talent, and curses that it's made from a "damn talent" as well as all talent powers. However, coming back to the current situation, Nana proceeds striking at him with "the weapon still in her hand" only to stop just close to Nanao's throat and the weapon itself reveals to be a glass shard and not the ice shard she had. Absolutely shocked, Nanao realizes the weapon she's holding right now isn't the one made from Seiya's talent earlier. As Nana catching her breath, Akira gets out of her shadow and has the ice shard weapon that Nana had, which made Nanao understand that they swap the two weapons. As Nanao accepts his lost, he tells Nana to "do it" and that he's "tired", while making a very depressing expression as he lost his will to live. Nana on the other hand, makes a sad pained expression while remembering praying at the cliff after she just pushed Nanao off from three years ago, and tells Nanao that she can't do it.

Making Peace with Nana/Mutation Begins[]

As Nana drops the glass shard on the ground, Nanao remarks on how she made him think she's using a talent but ended the fight without one is very like her and that she always been full of surprises, which she says yeah. She explains that before, she pretended to be friendly with him, so she can find out his weaknesses. She comments that she's still the same because she talked about saving him but launched a surprise attack. She figured Nanao was jealous of how she got along with the rest of the talented and knew that she can use it against him, making her realizes that she hasn't changed one bit on the island. After hearing all that, Nanao says they're both alike and concludes that both himself and Nana hate themselves, which left Nana taken a back and then makes a sadden expression. Nana ask Nanao if he thinks that they can start their relationship over, to which Nanao answers that he done a lot of awful things. Nana replies that so has she, but he tells her that he killed people. Nana says she knows and ask Nanao if they both can think about what they have done together, and Nanao ask if she really means what she's saying. She grips her hands together as she begs Nanao to please help her. Moe reaches out to Nana and clings to her arm asking Nanao to help Nana as well. Moe informs Nanao that while Nana is their friend, she always keeps them at arm's length. She admits that though it makes her sad, she thinks that Nana can only open her heart up to someone like Nanao who has the same regrets as she does and states she can feel it while insisting that Nana needs him.

While Nanao and Nana watches Moe repeatedly chant, "Join Us." at him, they see Kyouya walking out of the apartment building in front of them, while carrying a weaken Fuuko who's now awake, on his shoulder. Kyouya asks if the fight is over as he and Fuuko stares at Nanao. Nanao tells Nana that he tries to drag her down with him, but all her friends showed up. While remarking how he finds all that talk of wanting to help him was pretty annoying, which made Moguo angry as Seiya calms him down, he admits that he feels better now that he heard Nana out. As Nana thought that Nanao is going to join them, he however informs her that he's going back to headquarters and thinks that they're never going to see each other again. Nana tries pleading to him to stay, but shortly after Nanao tells her goodbye, he suddenly feels sick again and bends down to the ground. While everyone looking at him in concern, Nana asks if he's okay, but he starts coughing and tries to tell her not to worry, but his coughing wouldn't let him make a full sentence come out. As his coughing persists, Nana tells the gang that they need to let Nanao rest and for them to help her move him, but Nanao tells her shouldn't she run away from here and that the soldiers will want to know why they're together so late at night, but Nana says that isn't important right now. She presses her hand on Nanao's neck and tells him he's burning up. Nanao then starts scratching the left side of his face and begins screaming and coughing loudly. Kyouya tells Nana to hurry, while she and Moguo carry Nanao.

However, lights shine upon them, and it reveals that Tsuruoka arrive to the scene with his soldiers commenting that he made it just in time, shocking Nana and the gang, while the sickly Nanao is placed on the ground. Shizuka ask Tsuruoka if he needs something and tells them that Chief Nakajima isn't feeling well, so they were keeping an eye on him. However, Tsuruoka states that he's not here for them, which confuses Shizuka. He addresses Nanao and mentions that he doesn't usually use so much power which piqued his interest. Tsuruoka also assumes that he can feel that evil energy coursing through his body right now, but Nanao panting tells him he's still in control. Tsuruoka then orders his soldiers to aim their guns at Nanao shocking the gang who's still in his vicinity. Nana shields Nanao and asks Tsuruoka why they are aiming their weapons at him. Tsuruoka ignores her question and tells Nanao that he's grateful for his cooperation and that his death will lead to a massive breakthrough.

Nanao transitioning into an Enemy of Humanity

Nanao starts transitioning into an "Enemy of Humanity".

As a soldier about to pull the trigger, Nanao once again says as he yells, "I'M STILL IN CONTROL!!", while using his pain inducing talent that cause the soldiers and the gang to collapse to the ground. As Nana shortly recovers from his pain ability, she sees the left half of Nanao's face monstrosity mutated with four eyes and reptilian-like skin that left her completely horrified. Nanao then says to her, "This is the fate of the talented.", as the rest of the gang are utterly stunned from his appearance while Nana is processing the situation. Tsuruoka orders the soldiers to kill Nanao but as Nana tries to shield him again from their line of fire, a car van suddenly appears in the air with the trunk door opened in front of them and lands onto the ground. There's a person inside and it reveals to be Sachiko who tells the gang to get inside the van, shocking Nana as she calls her name out.

The Escape[]

As Kyouya tells Nana and everyone to hurry, the soldiers open fire on the vehicle while Sachiko ducks down for cover. The gang starts to run into the van, while Nana and Shizuka follow behind as they are carrying a sickly Nanao. Nanao protests that he's not one of them, but Nana argues that the soldiers are trying to kill him and that they can't just let them as she yanks his arm. As Tsuruoka calls the soldiers fools and proceeds to tell them to stop aiming for the van's tires and orders them to shoot and surround the gang, a fireball attack (From Moguo) in the air comes down into the ground in front of them that created a smokescreen that bought them enough time for the van to teleport outside the Managed Camp.

As the van is teleported in the air and lands roughly on the ground by a camp cabin that's deep in the mountains, Sachiko asks if everyone okay. When everyone exits out of the car and Sachiko hugs Kiyomi feeling relieved that she's okay, Moguo tells Nana and everyone that Kyouya is missing and that Kyouya pushed him into van when he was taking too long throwing the fireball from earlier. Fuuko panicking says that they need to go back for him, but Nana reluctantly says that they can't while Nanao is still inside the van on the floor breathing heavily.

Sometime later inside the camp cabin's living room after talking to a man named Fujishima who is a freelance reporter about the dire current state of the Supervisory Camp (AKA: Managed Camp) and the country, Nana and everyone hears Nanao coughing loudly inside one of the cabin's rooms across from them. They open the room door and Nana yells out his name as she finds him on the floor close to the bed. As she tries to help him stand up with Moe and Kiyomi next to her while the other talented are watching them from the room door, Nanao sarcastically asks Nana and the gang if Fujishima would still have come unarmed if he had seen his monstrous left-half face as he touches the second eye of one of its four eyes with his left hand's fingers. While chucking a bit as everyone looks at him with great concern, he says "Let everyone know that the talented really are monsters.".

Revealed the Dark Truth of the Talented[]

Later after getting the monster side of his face bandaged, Nanao finally revealed the truth to them that the talented all eventually turn into monsters and attack people which causes shocked reactions from Moguo, Seiya, and Sachiko from the horrible revelation and with Kiyomi asking that there's no point in them running away, to which Nanao says, "that's right" and that they have to be quarantined.

Kiyomi then proceeds to ask Nanao if they're quarantined, will the military be able to cure them. Nanao tells her that he was assisting Tsuruoka with his research to develop a drug that suppresses talented individuals' powers and to find antibodies that will stop the transformation process.

Leaves The Gang[]

Sometime later outside the cabin with everyone else asleep inside, as Nana ponders on how to save the talented and their families that are stll trapped inside the camp and what to do about Nanao's monster transformation, she sees Nanao himself as he opens the cabin entrance door, and they meet each other's gaze. Nanao says goodbye to her as he walks away as he is about to leave them, but Nana tells him to wait and asks where he is going. Nanao responds that he doesn't know since he doesn't have a home to return to and that he'll probably go back to the camp, but Nana refutes the idea stating that the soldiers will just try to kill him, so she asks to Nanao to work with them instead. However, Nanao reminds her that with his current condition he could completely turn into a monster and murder her and everyone else as well. He also further adds that he done a lot of horrible, terrible things, so he can't stay with her, but Nana proposes why don't he try to atone for what he has done instead.

But Nanao just chuckles and says, "I can't do what you've done.", as he uses his talent to make himself invisible so he can disappear into the woods. As Nana tries to chase after him, she asks Nanao on whether they'll meet again, and she yells. "IF WE MEETS AGAIN... PLEASE! LET ME BE YOUR FRIEND!", but there was no answers at all from Nanao to her questions.
